Rock show to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

YOUNGSTOWN — Local musicians are teaming up to help feed the hungry with Battle of the Bands at Cedars Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St. The rock show Saturday night will raise funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Headlining the show will be the Kellys, who will be joined by the Youngstown Tramps and the Youngstonians. Viking Jim of 93.3 WNCD-FM will serve as host. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Doors open at 9:30 p.m., and the music will start at 10 p.m.

Kenny Ali will perform at party for rapper Common

Youngstown hip-hop artist Kenny Ali will perform with his band at the after-party for rap star Common’s CD release party at Scripts Night Club in Cleveland, 1204 Old River Road (the Flats), at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Common’s new CD, released this week, is “Universal Mind Control.” Admission is $10 at the door and the public is welcome. Common will be in attendance but is not scheduled to perform.

Ali opened for Lil Wayne at Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown this year. He has also opened for Lil Jon, Pitbull and G-UNIT.

The Tuesday show will mark the beginning of a Midwest campaign for Ali, who will release his second solo album in late spring (Affluent Records).

Ohio native to lead New York Pops

NEW YORK (AP) — Conductor Steven Reineke has been named music director of The New York Pops, the nation’s largest independent pops orchestra specializing in popular music.

Reineke is an established symphonic composer and associate conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. His new job begins Oct. 1, 2009.

He succeeds New York Pops founder and former NBC music director Skitch Henderson, who died in 2005.

Reineke is a native of Tipp City, Ohio. He conducted the New York Pops’ 25th birthday gala at Carnegie Hall earlier this year and will lead the orchestra in the annual telecast of the 2009 Macy’s July 4 fireworks on NBC.

The New York Pops was founded in 1983 to create greater public appreciation of America’s rich musical heritage.
