AUSTINTOWN — There’s more to the township than meets the eye, or even the U.S. Census.
That’s how some residents respond to a Forbes.com story naming Austintown the No. 5 fastest dying town in America.
The list of 10 was compiled using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, a three-year study.
The Forbes Web site says it calculated the ranking using “income growth, the rate of domestic in-migration, the change in poverty and the percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree or higher.”
Those who live and work in the township said they wholeheartedly disagree with the assessment of Austintown — saying there’s more to it than mere numbers.
Norm Holfer said he moved to the township a year ago, after living in North Jackson for 44 years, believing he and his wife could obtain a better quality of life.
“This is the nicest community in the whole area — no comparison,” he said. “I don’t think anything is going to really shut it down.”

Norm's evaluation seems at first blush to be much less scientific than that of the good people at Forbes, perhaps tomorrow's article will offer more than opinion.
Yeah. Perhaps.
So is Youngsotwn number 4 or 3? Come o now even I have to admit there are places aorund our valley that are worse off like Warren or Cambell. I doubt they even know where Austintown is,. lol.
I swear, if I didn't think Forbes did these kinds of articles to sell magazines and get clicks to their website,
I would think they're getting some kind of sick pleasure in chronicling the death of American communities. This magazine's sole purpose is to follow the paths of corporate executives and the elite who live in this country, and have, over the last 25 years, made enormous profits through the shipping of American jobs overseas to China, Latin America, and India at peasant wages. I'm sick of them, and I hope that the backlash of this systematic greed, which is now the new depression, will engulf them all.
i really think they artilce got thigs al lwrong too. if you go by numbers they could have picked any towns.
Its the truth, if you look around there are more and more businesses closing down in A-town. Also there are a number of home foreclosures which leads to decreased property values. And who can say that more college grads are moving to A-town? no one! They got the ranking correct, I don't think anyone on here can say, "Hey, I moved to Austintown because the jobs there pay more." The writing is on the wall people, ignore it if you want but A-town is turning into Y-town.
In some ways alot of palces are. We are all in the same boat here.
Well if Austintown is Number 5, then Phoenix, AZ must be Number 4, Baltimore, MD must be Number 3, Orlando, FL Number 2, and Las Vegas, NV Number 1.......if you take into consideration that ALL of those major metropolitan areas are close to leading the nation in foreclosed homes and house values that dropped over 30%; not necessarily a bad group for Austintown ,OH to be hanging with; even though it had to do with a negative twist.
I could make my own lsit up based o nthsoe smae figures and the cities would be all differnet. they picked them from a hat more or less.
WHERE IS OLDMANGRUMP COMMENTS NOW? OLDMANGRUMP WHERE ARE YOU? I GOT TO SEE THE DEGRADING REMARKS YOU MAKE ABOUT THIS ARTICLE AND YOUR "ATOWN". PERHAPS YOUR STILL SITTING BACK ON YOUR COUCH AND CAN'T GET UP!
Seems to me that the people in Austintown may be in denial. They should look at what Girard is doing with Youngstown and climb aboard the JEDD Train, ALL ABOARD!! next stop Boardman. Hey Old Man GRUMP! HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? First Austintown votes down the school levy and now this, say it isnt so.
The dictionary defines "sycophant" as: "a self-seeking, servile, fawning parasite"
That's a good definition of Forbes magazine. A magazine that spends its time fawning over people who have way too much money, people who made most of that money stripping America of its middle class. This recession is payback.
Norm get some glasses buddy your eye ain't working.. When was the last time you took a ride out of the Mahoning County to see how civilized people roam the earth?
I guess if you lived in North Jackson for all those years A-Town would be a step up since they have in door plumbing and hot water!!
There is another world out there, you will change your attitude fast!!!
Well, Well, Well: I have been posting here for months (look back at my previous post's) stating Austintown was Youngstown's ghetto west and one of the most dilapted places in the U.S.
Everybody boohooed, cried, and said is wasn't so...
But here it is again another black eye for Y-Town's ghetto west! Right there in a national and respected magazine!!
Let's see? MOB ties, over bearing labor unions, corrupt public officials, contaminated soil, section 8 capital of the mid west, I think I'll move my business there.....
Pull off the interstate of Austintown's major exit at SR46 and I80 and look around, live nude dancing, body massage, empty boarded up gas station, open drug sales and hookers. WOW what a 1st and lasting opinion, a party town for every pervert and drug user who needs a spot to call home!!!
Now with GM on the brink of bankruptcy, Lordstown down to 2 shifts and posiibly on the 2010 shut down hot list (because of all the above, specifically the UAW presence here).
BUT NO MOST REIDENTS AND POLITICIANS LOOK AT A-TOWN AND SAY IT AIN'T SO, IT WILL ALL BE BETTER SOON!!!
WAKE UP PEOPLE, GET OUT NOW!!!! BEFORE YOUR HOUSE IS WORTH A BUCK SIXTY EIGHT....
They lsot my epsct. they could have picked any town in the county but hey have to go after Ohio all the time and ignore the fact that thr whole county is in the smae boat here.
You know what? There is more to do in Austintown today then ever. I grew up splitting my time between Lake Milton and Youngstown and spent a ton of time in Austintown after football games and stuff. What I wouldn't have given for a Starbucks or Game stop or Walmart back then. I can't knock Austintown and the girls are the best around.
Sorry folks, Old Man Grump has been very busy getting real estate agents to give him ther best estimate of the value of his house as well as poring over out of town papers to see where he should move! He may be looking to buy in Y-town, get your ads ready! He can one-stop shop for houses right here!
if you sjut look at numbers and do not ask the town themselves this is what you get,a article that is misleading and full of lies.
I have lived in Austintown all my life.
Go for it Grump, you only stand to lose.
Things will get better evetually, they always do.
