Barack and Biden eat breakfast in Boardman

Published: Sat, August 30, 2008 @ 10:26 a.m.

By David Skolnick

BOARDMAN — Barack Obama had waffles, bacon and two eggs over medium. Joe Biden had the French toast on the advice of Boardman Township Administrator Jason Loree.

And the 50 or so people eating breakfast today at the Yankee Kitchen Family Restaurant in Boardman had a memory that will last a lifetime.

The Democratic presidential nominee and Biden, his vice presidential running mate, along with their wives ate breakfast at the restaurant this morning.

While some — primarily Boardman officials and their families — knew ahead of time that the foursome were making the stop, it came as a surprise to others eating at the Yankee Kitchen.

Robert and Beverly Dixie of Youngstown eat breakfast at a different place every Saturday.

Their meal today at the Yankee Kitchen was their first time there in 25 years, he said.

“It’s divine intervention that we stopped here,” he said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You don’t get to shake the hands of the next president of the United States and the next vice president every day.”

The Obamas and Bidens talked for about 20 minutes with those at the restaurant and shook many hands.

Tomi Beach of Boardman sat at a table with her daughter, Abbey Beach, and Abbey’s fiance, Loree, just a few feet from the Obamas and Bidens.

“It’s surreal to be eating this close to them,” Tomi Beach said. “It’s totally overwhelming. I’m really happy that we came.”

After a quick bite, the foursome spent some time with those at the restaurant.

They had spent the night at the Hampton Inn in Austintown after a Friday rally in Beaver, Pa.

They were on their way to the funeral of U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones in Cleveland that was to start at 11 a.m.

They didn’t get out of the restaurant until 9:15 a.m.

“You need to step it up with Michelle,” Obama told a campaign worker. “She’s always the last one.”

In a brief interview with The Vindicator as he left, Biden said he was “very happy” with the reception he got at the restaurant.

“It’s kind of like home,” he said. “This is like Scranton,” where the Delaware senator was born.

When asked about debating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, selected Friday as Republican John McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Biden said, “Oh, I think she’s going to be awful good, awful good. I’m impressed with her so far.”

what a snub to austintown, they're right there near the highway and travel back to boardman from beaver to eat...how can we west-siders forgive him...this will have serious implications in november...btw, sarah palin, with mcain in pittsburgh today, said "it's good to see another part of the country"

I wonder...

Did they call for an early "retreat" before the check came?

Did they blame the bad coffee on, of course, President Bush?

Did they promise that I would pay for the meals of the patrons who would vote for them?

Did Obama have enough experience navigating the menu, or did Biden need to help him?

Was the food as "bitter" as the food in Pennsylvania?

How many "....uhhh....ummm.."s were there during the ordering process?

Just wondering.....

Isaac,

I'm not an Obama fan but do you think that maybe he ate breakfast near where his local campaign office is at 5020 Market St. in BOARDMAN?

As far as I know, there isn't one in Austintown. The question is why didn't they stay at the Hampton Inn or the even better Holiday Inn in Boardman like John Kerry did 4 years ago?

maybe justice, i didn't hear that he stopped there though...not exactly a big commute....i think we should have a yankee kitchen and better breakfast options on the west side (local diners, not just the chains)....that's actually what was on my mind, the breakfast choice not politics...although obviously some people can't get their talking points out of their sausage casings....paraphrasing our new hero ms. palin though "it's great to visit another part of the valley"

Why not just state the real reason you don't want to vote for Obama? Everyone already knows what it is. No one knows who you are hiding behind your keyboard. Just say it.

Obama is not going to carry Ohio by courting urban African-Americans that he has most certainly won 99% over to his side, he is going to take Ohio by winning over Caucasian voters. Last time I looked, the State of Ohio's make up was 12% African-Americans and 88% Caucasian residents. If I was an Obama supporter I'd want him in Austintown and Boardman canvassing the Caucasian voters instead of in the City limits of Youngstown and Cleveland.

And in his previous two visits, he was in Youngstown at Beeghly Center and in Austintown at Fitch. So this time he made it a point to stop at a small, family-owned restaurant in Boardman that I'm sure his campaign had informed him was the cite of other political activity in 2004 when a few celebrities stumped for John Kerry there. Remember?

Oh brother, does it matter what street Obama/Biden visited, too? Could we just look at the big picture and be happy they came here, listened to our fellow citizens (wherever they may have a house be it Boardman, Ytown or Columbiana) and give a darn? They certainly do have a chance to win this state. There are many of us that don't focus on skin color but the measure of a man, his education and his plans for the future of this country. Its time for a change!

wow, really no sense of humor here....if you think i'm not voting for obama, watch me run to the voting booth on nov. 4 to punch his name, or i could (or would if i had it) send you video of my utter disgust with this town/state for not doing it in the primary....once again, in the words of our new hero sarah palin "it's good to see another part of humanity"

Obama also visited Niles for a workout before breakfast. Personally there are alot better place to eat in Austintown, Youngstown, and in Boardman itself. Maybe they went there cause it a low key place, and didn't have much time before they had to leave for the funeral. I don't see this as a slap in the face to youngstown. Just very planned quick in and out of the area. If they had more time I am sure they would have stopped in the Youngstown area.

isaac45:"in the words of our new hero sarah palin "it's good to see another part of humanity"
You call her a new hero? Please the only reason McCain picked her was to bring in the women who supported Clinton. As a once support of Clinton, and a woman myself, I find it to be a hugh insult and slap to the face to pick a woman with very little experience with forgien policy or in politics/government all togther. I think she has a false sense of what is going on in the US begin way up there in a state filled with money!

I think if McCain wins, our economy is just going to get worse. It will be another 4 years of having Bush in office. I think Bush has done enough damage to our counrty, and we need a true leader and right hand man. Yes I said man, and woman. I support Obama and Biden!!!! Nothing will ever change my mind!!

He should have gone to the Golden Dawn. They could have driven by all the vacant buildings in Youngstown. See what a Democratic Governemt can do for you.

yeah woody, the constant rotation of republican presidencies, governors, senators, state legislatures, and judiciaries over the years had nothing at all to do with it....do you think bush could handle prison as well as traficant?....i mean, jimmy's got a burgeoning art career now...i wonder if bush can finally contribute to society after he leaves office....i'd actually vote for taft over mcain, though i do loves me sara and her snowbilly clan of crazy alaskans

thanks, dmets...woody's right to criticize dem. leadership here...it's depressing to see and they have to take responsibility, but to pretend that y-town is a unigue case in the country, separate from economic decisions made from republicans in higher offices (trade, taxes, etc.) is silly...those/these dems wish they had the power and money to make decisions like bush has made....and when y-town was doing great when my parents were growing up i'm sure dems had power then too...so it pays to look above and beyond too....very depressed tonight though, these evil republicans are hiding sarah from me, trying to teach her, her family, and supporters to be Less crazy...that will not work with me

if you ask me i could care less where those two ate but wherever it was i am sure everyone thought it was cool to have them there. some one should have made a few detours and showed them the other Youngstown, the one with abandoned houses boarded up buildings including the 7 houses on pennsylvania ave in a one block area on the north side right by YSU

I'm sure when Barack came to YSU he noticed the blight. I don't think there's a way to get to the campus without seeing it.

Born in Youngstown, still has family in Youngstown, and understands the problems in the area. It is only a hop, skip, and a jump from Austintown to Boardman anyhow. I get depressed whenever I do come home, Youngstown has changed so much. Growing up on the southside, and seeing the state of it, just upsets me. I have seen Obama speak three times now in person. Once at St. Johns at O.S.U., Once in Dublin, Oh. and yes at Y.S.U.. I am sure that he saw the path that Youngstown has been on while driving over to the campus. It is hard not to, considering how dismal the area looks. I can remember what Ausintown, Boardman, Niles, etc. used to look like also. Even the suburbs of Youngstown are heading in the wrong direction. If you want the same old things, and if you the voters of Mahoning county wish to travel on the same path then McCain and Palin should be your choice. If you are willing to take a risk, then Obama and Biden should be your answer. Considering the state of the area, Change probably would be a good thing. Could it get any worse? Do not need a sign on name to hide my identity either. Joe Teague Jr c/o 89, lived in Columbus ever since I graduated from Wilson, and yes my high school does not even exist any more.

Congrats to the vindy for pointing out a key fact....Boardman and Local Dems knew of the visit ahead of time...the 50 folks who where there were likely all connected with them...propaganda at it's finest....this is the exact same crap Bush does...

so were obama and biden supposed to announce they'd be stopping for breakfast? obama's been in the valley twice in two venues big enough to hold anyone who wanted to see him.

what did you want to ask him? how his eggs were?
