I'm not going to be able to make it there, so would someone please ask the junior Senator if he feels threatened by Britney Spears having only 3.5 years less practical experience than him (much of which he spent campaigning and not legislating).

Well he is the first black candiate who has a good shot at being presidnet. That alone is history tht some do not like. Now that Levy if it passes will not do much of anything and if it was on tuesday it would be aa long day.

Old Man Grump..... Austintown is by no means a "rich" suburb. We have several very nice areas, however, we also have Section 8 apartments(Compass West). I also believe his choice of site was probably based on hitting up the Clinton supporters. She came her as well. As for the levy, it's in November for Austintown and it will pass.... we asked for it over having open enrollment.

All 35,000 of us? Dobut it and I live in Compass West. Iwould admit it will be clsoe but saying you nkow it wil lpass is pointless uness you are pyshic. Taht and it can hold a lot of people which makes it a good palce to hold rallies and such.

EVEN IF that 4.9 passes, are you aware that "IT" still would not be enough ~~ & probably OPEN ENROLLMENT would STILL take place ALONG with other measures to be implemented.

You people are so negative. Why don't you open up your minds? McCain is the same OLD politics. Stop listening to tv campaign commercials and actually watch Obama debate and learn what he is about. McCain can't even say a speech without a teleprompter. No one is qualified for president until they are president. Do you really want someone who has been involved in the same old politics like McCain..then I'm afraid you are going to get the same old thing you've been getting with Bush. We need someone who will help the middle class not just make the rich get richer and grant earmarks to all their friends...not to mention excessive government spending. Wake up America..we need change! We need to take our country back!

to Young40something, I DID listen to and watch Obama. He's great on rhetoric, but not so much on substance. He was asked what he, as POTUS, will do about the scabs who were crossing picket lines at that steel plant. He went on a wonderful pro-union tangent, extolling how unions were the backbone of this country, and how much of what we enjoy today was earned on the backs of the unions. He never did answer the guy's question, though.

Then he claimed he's going to give each and every taxpayer in this country a check for $1000, with the money to be taken from the record-setting profits of the oil companies. Um, won't that just cause the gasoline prices to soar even further? Maybe he thinks, since he's got a whole 140 days of experience at the federal government level, that he can negotiate with the oil companies and cause them to willingly give up their profits.

He also claimed that he's going to have thousands of electric cars on the road by 2010, and not built in any foreign country, but built right here in Ohio!! I wonder how that plays in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, and the rest of the other 49 states? Hey, you don't suppose he told the people in Iowa that he was going to build electric cars IN IOWA, do you? Or the people in California that he'd build them THERE?

When you stop drinking the kool-aid and look at what the man says, he's full of hot air. He's telling people what they want to hear, and nobody - certainly not the press, who've admitted they give him favored status - questions him on any of it.

If the levy for the schools doesn't pass then shame on the voters in Austintown. I was raised to vote yes for all police, fire and school levies. As far as open enrollment goes, I've said it before and I'll say it again, where you live is a choice and I will move from Austintown rather than deal with open enrollment. And for future reference, when you read my comments try to stay on point for the subject at hand. I was commenting to Old Man in regards to his perception that Austintown is a rich suburb. I wasn't commenting on Compass West, just that we did indeed have all economic classes represented. The levy comment was also aimed at Old Man, because he erroneously believed we were also voting on this yesterday. I also wasn't here for an open enrollment debate.... what happens, happens. Try reading it again..... I was trying to make the correlation between his visit and Clinton's to the exact same place.

Peace2U, I've read the article you referenced and I am willing to pay the increase in tax on my home and any other fees Austintown Schools can come up with in order to keep open enrollment out of the schools. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to provide my children with a quality education in a safe environment.

Not to go off point here, but places like Compass West is very bad for a community. I know there are people out there that really need help, but about 60% of the people living at Compass West are playing the system. They have boyfriends and girlfriends living with them, but tell the goverment that it is only them and their children. So, they get to pay $15 rent on a 3 bedroom townhouse, with a boyfriend that makes good money. This is what happens when a democrate is in office. They give to the welfare people, instead of making them try to fend for themselves like the rest of us.

Not to keep this off topic, but jbenson, you are wrong. There will be open enrollment whether you vote yes for this levy or not. They only said that to you to get you to vote yes and hand them more money that they can waste. I, unlike you, was not raised to keep throwing money at the problem hoping it will go away. I was also raised to hold the people that are elected to those boards accountable to the community. Our board has never been, they don't even bother to respond to questions from the tax payers. This levy is going down in flames, just like the ones yesterday.

"He never did answer the guy's question, though."

Maybe because he's not the President yet? I thought his message was pretty clear regarding organized labor.

I've looked at the kool-aid, examined it, and it still seems pretty good to me. Obama has an eye to the future, which he outlined pretty clearly in the speech in Austintown. If you want his entire platform to see more specifics, check out his website.

NoBS, the price of gas goes up based on two things: Fear and Speculation as to how much we need/have left/will use. The Fear & Speculation occurs all the time, Weather disasters, terror threats, foreign wars... even holiday/vacation seasons.

If Obama is suggesting that we dispense some of the excess profits from Oil companies than a Democratic Congress could right (and pass with Obama) legislation that prohibits them from unjustly raising prices to counter the $1K checks.

We need to get off oil. I know you are very skeptical of this ever happening but I'm going to fill you all in on a little secret happening here in Ytown:

A student at YSU has developed a Hydrogen Fuel Kit. He put it in his '89 pickup truck and gets 86 miles to the gallon. His name is Corey Myers (hope I spelled that right) and he got a grant earlier this year from the government to continue developing it. This is something we could all use! Screw the Saudis, forget wars for oil, drill in our country and use these kits till we ween off the stuff all together.

We should all be supporting this guy! Maybe if we're lucky enough, he'll even keep his future company of developing these hydrogen fuel kits here in Ytown, meaning better jobs for the people here...

Support NEW ideas for once.

Like I said, what happens with the levy happens. My parents didn't raise a fool. I was taught to vote yes for the important levies. I will continue to say yes to the police... I want them to be there if I need them, I will vote for the fire dept... if my home is in flames I want them to come and most importantly, my children deserve a great education in a safe environment.... so I will vote yes for the levy. If the levy fails or passes and open enrollment becomes a reality I'll move to a school district without open enrollment end of story. I think you have forgotten for whom the levy will benefit.... the children. Think about that when you arbitrarily vote it down. And also don't cry and moan over the problems that follow you asked for them.

28AtownParent(487 comments)posted 3 years, 6 months ago

jbenson - this school district does nothing for the benefit of the children, which has been exampled by their many actions to "cut costs". The closed a school, moved all those kids out of their neighborhoods to other schools and to fit them in the already overcrowded elementary schools they removed computer labs and libraries - where does that benefit the kids. If you pass the levy it won't open the school back up. They built a new school where not every kid can sit down to eat lunch - the new levy won't change that. They could have cut 1.5 million from the budget during contract negotiations, but didn't, instead they decided to bus the 4th-5th graders with the high school kids.

You continue to blindly throw money at people who only spend it in their best interests - not the children's. I will continue to fight to make changes in the way they run things so that it actually does benefit the kids. You might want to put your house on the market now, open enrollment is coming.

SickofSameOld, Peace2U, and others, I'm sure Corey sleeps better at night, knowing you support him. How, exactly, do you support him? Sending him warm, fuzzy thoughts doesn't pay the bills, you know.

Hydrogen is the most plentiful element we have on Earth, but the process of extracting it from the various compounds it exists in is what costs the money. Sure, if your school subsidizes you and you get a tank of hydrogen to experiment with, you could modify your car to run on it, but when that tank is empty, what are you going to do? THAT's what needs to change - no alternative fuel will be worth spit unless it's readily available.

One more thing: Gasoline engines can burn many things with little modification. Hydrogen is among them, as is propane, alcohol, and so on. You still need oil, though, for lubrication.

They closed Davis to save money, my daughter went there up until this past year... she will now go to Watson, no big deal. There were too many elementary schools to begin with. As for contract negotations.... teachers wages need increased not decreased or kept stagnant. I entrust teachers with the loves of my life for the better part of the day...I want them paid well. If you feel so strongly that your children do not benefit from their education with Austintown take them out and homeschool them or pay tuition elsewhere. I will "continue to blindly throw money" into the schools.... I believe in supporting my schools. No system is perfect and frankly I have had a wonderful experience with Austintown educators and administrators. Our kids must live on different planets! As for my house, I'll rent it to the next wave of problems looking for a better place to school their deliquents and move to Canfield.

How can you say there were too many elementary schools? You must not care about the community atmosphere those schools embraced - shame on you. You are just one of those parents who buries their head in the sand and refuses to hold the BOE accountable for their actions. I love when people resort to "if you don't like it then leave arguments". Frankly, if people don't stand up and force a change then they are the ones who should leave. Status quo is no longer an option. Pull your head out of the sand and take a look around, the school system has gone completely down hill. Of course you have had wonderful experiences, they like complacent people like you who eat the crap they feed you. If you can't see the problems, then I actually do believe you live on a different planet.

Good grief, nobody would ever mistake me for a person that buries their head in the sand. I have had a wonderful experience with Mrs. White, Mrs. Manning, Mr. Bakes and Princial Lenton. These were the people directly responsible for the education of my daughter. I attend the BOE meetings, I am a member of the PTA and if ever I feel the need to be involved I am. I am a realist, there were too many schools. I don't need to have an elementary school in my backyard to feel a sense of community. It seems to me that your problem is with change. Again, if you feel so strongly that Austintown Schools have "gone completely downhill" do something about it by going elsewhere for your children's education. I certainly wouldn't sit by waiting for what I perceived to be the "change" I was seeking. I'd have my child in the best possible educational environment right now.

36jbenson70(17 comments)posted 3 years, 6 months ago

That was a very select group of members that rallied... I was not for or against the closing. I see the merits of both positions, however, I'm not upset over the closing. There's also a big difference between being a member and being involved in a "rally". You have to be a member to paticipate in any PTA sponsored events with your child at the school (room parent, etc). And I stated I didn't need an elementary school in my backyard for a sense of community, no other reason was stated. Please try to follow the arguments being made in my posts.

I wouldn't feel the need to continue to respond if you were actually reading what I wrote. You can't pick one or two words out of an entire post and focus on that and that alone. And if you knew tha meaning of PTA, then why did you assume I was at a rally? I had been accused of burying my head in the sand when it came to the schools.... my mentioning the PTA was to point out that I was involved. Can I be sarcastic, yes, have I been here, no, only irritated that the sum of my blog has not been read. I'm over this whole conversation. The school closed.. get over it. My child's education is managed by me and she will be fine no matter the levy issue, school closings, etc.

You have spoken as if Austintown Schools are the worst of the worst. Gimme a list of negatives contributing to the schools failure and your plan to fix them. And instead of personally attacking me when you respond, as you did jb, focus on what I've asked and said, nothing more.

My child has been provided with a wonderful educational experience at Austintown and truly, to me, that's all that DOES matter in my book. I'm sorry you cannot say the same. Everyone takes away something different from their interactions as have you and I. Good luck with quest to reform Austintown Schools.... See you at the BOE meetings!
