ATTORNEY GENERAL MARC DANN

ATTORNEY GENERAL MARC DANN

Problem hires

Since becoming attorney general in January 2007, Dann has received praise for aggressively pursuing predatory lenders, nonperforming charter schools and other businesses. He was favorably compared to former New York Attorney General and Gov. Eliot Spitzer by The New York Times when such a comparison was considered a good thing. But when it comes to some of his hires, there is a flip side:

He fired ex-Youngstown police Detective Sgt. Rick Alli as his chief of law enforcement operations in April 2007 after only three months on the job. Dann claimed Alli was improperly taking two public salaries.

He fired David L. Nelson of Liberty as his deputy security director in May 2007 after it was discovered Nelson was convicted in 1976 of involuntary manslaughter.

Dann also fired Rick Houze, his top fiscal watchdog, in September 2007. Houze listed that he was a certified public accountant on his r sum when that was no longer the case.
