Police use cruisers to scare away dogs

Published: Wed, April 2, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Police called to a report of vicious dogs bothering customers at a store in the 1800 block of Mahoning Avenue were able to drive the animals away by herding them with police cars, but not before one of the dogs was struck several times by one of the cars.

Police said they were called to the Circle K store around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday in reference to two dogs described as Rottweilers sitting outside the store’s door, with one of the pair barking and growling at the door. Police said efforts to reach a dog warden to come to the scene were unsuccessful and the location of the animals prevented officers from shooting them.

The officers, however, did manage to chase the dogs out of the store parking lot with their cruisers — although one of the animals was struck several times by one of the cars, according to the report.

The dogs disappeared down North Maryland Avenue, police said, noting the animals appeared to be malnourished.
