Video: Sheriff Smith Patrol Stop
Sheriff Smith Patrol Stop
LISBON — He was up for re-election.
He may have talked to the trooper’s boss once or twice.
He small-talked about recent Cleveland school violence.
And he pleaded for a favor.
Columbiana County Sheriff David L. Smith took several approaches with a state trooper in trying to get out of his Thursday OVI arrest.
Smith was stopped on Interstate 70 in Guernsey County about 9:30 p.m. Video of the arrest was received by The Vindicator on Wednesday and can be viewed at www.vindy.com.
All of Smith’s pleas measured nothing on the trooper, S.W. Bayless — except about how things would work in Columbiana County.
“Can’t you just let me go home?” Smith can be heard clearly asking on the video.
Bayless asked, “Can you do that in Columbiana County?”
“Yes,” Smith said.
“You just stop people and don’t test them and then you let them go?” asked Bayless in an inquisitive tone.
“If it was me, yes,” Smith said.

wow - DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE
What these people (Cronin, Smith, others) need to do is get caught by local LE and not the OSHP. It's the locals that let fellow LE officers go without a citation. OSHP never gives you a pass.
I have to wonder. Why didn't the Trooper charge him for resisting arrest?! It sure sounded like the Sheriff was resisting arrest when the Trooper was putting the cuffs on! If it was some other, ordinary citizen, they would have been charged with resisting arrest on top of the DUI. Who says the Trooper wasn't playing favorites?! What typical slanted Ohio State Highway Patrol bull do you think this is?! I think there were some politics involved in this arrest.
The cops to a certain extent always take care of thier own. However there is a remote chance this could have been a set up. Either way he should pay like any normal citizen would have to.
