CANTON — Two rounds are scheduled today in the girls Division II district tennis tournament at Weis Park courts, and Poland High School’s Alyssa Tom will face Kim Kinsley of Marlington and the Bulldogs’ Gabriele Brocker will meet Taylor Wedlake of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in first-round single matches at 9 a.m.

In first round doubles matches at 9 a.m., Poland’s Megan Bennett and Jessica Mullin go against Robyn Silver and Tamar Lisbona of Beachwood, and the Bulldogs’ Lexa Rossi and Danielle Mullin take on Amanda Clark and Melissa Clark of Tallmadge.

Pam Steinhauser, in her 15th season as Poland coach said, “This is the first time in 10 years that I am taking this many players to district.”

“Tom [a senior] started playing tennis in the fifth grade. She is a very studious, very quiet, hard worker and is in the best shape of her career and playing the best tennis she has ever played and I expect her to do well,” said Steinhauser.

“Brocker [a freshman] is a breath of fresh air to me. She works hard and has a phenomenal sense of humor. She cracks me up. She’s so much fun,” said Steinhauser.

Bennett and Jessica Mullin made it to state last year, and this is the fourth time they are going to district.

Steinhauser said, “They are young ladies you would like to have as daughters. Megan is more aggressive and Jessica is a natural defensive player.”

She said about Lexa, a senior, and Danielle Mullin, a freshman, that, “You would think they had known each other forever. They act like best friends and Danielle has learned a lot because of Lexa’s experience.”

Warren JFK’s Marissa Nocera, a junior, will face Rachel Reed of Marlington in a first-round singles match.

“[Nocera has] been playing tennis since she was 7 years old,” said Warren JFK coach John Rossi. “We have nicknamed her the ‘Hammer’ because she can spot a shot inside her strike zone and put the point away. She became more disciplined as the season progressed.”

Alison Rossi and Gina Fredericka of Warren JFK will meet Ashleigh Bristow and Carlita McNutt of Canton South in a first round match.

Rossi played No. 1 singles and Fredericka No. 3 during the regular season, and teamed up for doubles for the sectional.

Cardinal Mooney’s Jaclyn DiDomenico, a sophomore, and Allie St. George, a junior, will play Lindsey Endres and Lauren Coggins of Canton Central Catholic in a first-round doubles match.

Boardman’s Carolyn and Ann Jesko take on Cassie Simmelink and Jenna Goedde Avon Lake in a Div. I first round doubles match today at Oberlin College.

Canfield’s Christina Brant and Lauren Sulick will go against Courtney Flissner and Nancy Joyce of Walsh Jesuit in a first-round match.
