HUBBARD — A 60-year-old city business owner is recovering from a weekend robbery and attack that sent her to the hospital for stitches.
Police were called to The Christmas Store at 888 W. Liberty St. just after noon Sunday to investigate a robbery at the store.
Once at the store, officers found blood on the sidewalk outside the business and at the entrance, dollar bills on the ground near the entrance doors and the 60-year-old owner being treated by paramedics.
Sgt. James Taafe said the woman was ultimately sent to the hospital for stitches to her head.
Police reported that the woman had been working at the store alone when a man came into the business and demanded money. The man, police were told, placed his hand in his pocket as if he had a gun and told the woman, “Don’t make me hurt you.”
The thief took about $170 from the cash register and ordered the woman to a back room, but she refused to go. He then tried to leave the store, but the owner tried to follow the man.
He pushed her back into the store, where she fell into some glass shelves and was cut on the forehead.
The man was seen by several witnesses leaving the store. No arrest has been made.

This article brings up an issue for which I have mixed feelings. The bozo that commited this crime was being pursued earlier by YPD in a stolen car and the police backed-off as the car headed into Hubbard. As I listened to the scanner, it sounded as if YPD was hoping that the Hubbard police would continue the pursuit. I understand the dangers of high speed pursuits, but when the pursuit is terminated then somebody who is clearly a criminal (fleeing in a stolen car) has the opportunity to move down the road and commit more crimes. Luckily the woman only had minor wounds, but what if she was shot and killed? I just wondered if any of you had any thoughts about police pursuits.
I tend to agree with you, and also have mixed feelings. There has to be some way to continue tracking this person (any person(s) like this), maybe unmarked cars that could follow him at a normal speed - I mean, if he thinks he isn't followed anymore, he will slow down, too. Then the moment he pulls in the parking lot you have him. Something like that. I feel sorry for this lady, but also have a little comment... no money is worth losing your life for... let them leave... give them the money... just let them go and stay safe. I'm so glad she wasn't hurt worse, even though especially mentally this is probably bad enough.
