GIRARD — City water customers will soon see an increase in water rates, but how much of an increase hasn’t been decided.
Mayor James Melfi said the city, which buys water from Youngstown, Niles and McDonald, has seen increases in water costs from its suppliers four times in the last five years. The city, however, has only raised rates to pass those costs on to consumers once in the last eight years.
Melfi said city leaders want to keep water rates at a reasonable level, but can no longer shoulder the increasing costs from suppliers.
“The rate increases have caught up to us now and we are raising the rates to keep up with the cost,” he said.
