Mahoning commissioners didn't do homework, says Cafaro lawyer

Published: Mon, July 23, 2007 @ 12:51 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners did not do their homework before they agreed to buy Oakhill Renaissance Place, a lawyer for the Ohio Valley Mall Co. said this morning.

“The county did not do its due diligence,” as a perspective homeowner would do before buying his own house, said Thomas Anastos, one of the OVM’s lawyers.

Anastos was making his opening statement in the nonjury trial of a taxpayers' lawsuit OVM filed against the commissioners in OVM’s attempt to rescind the county's purchase of Oakhill.

Oakhill is the former Forum Health Southside Medical Center, 345 Oakhill Ave.

The county bought Oakhill in U.S Bankruptcy court last summer.
