After fifth defeat in row, Scrappers open home series

Published: Wed, July 4, 2007 @ 12:00 a.m.

After a 9-6 loss to Auburn Tuesday, Mahoning Valley will play Jamestown tonight.

AUBURN, N.Y. — Brad Emaus hit a two-run homer and the Auburn Doubledays used a pair of four-run innings to defeat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 9-6, in a New York-Penn League game Tuesday.

The loss was the fifth in a row for the Scrappers (6-9) and completed a three-game series sweep for the Doubledays (9-6).

Mahoning Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Juan Valdes and an RBI groundout by Justin Jenkins.

But the Doubledays answered with a four-run rally. Baron Frost’s double drove in one run and was followed by Emau’s first professional home run.

The Scrappers tied the game in the third inning on a two-run double by Todd Martin, but Auburn rallied again, scoring four runs on just one hit.

Four-run uprising

Mahoning Valley starter Daniel Frega walked two batters and hit another to load the bases. After Frost popped out, Cristo Arnal’s throwing error allowed two runs to score, then Christopher Haupt hit a double to score two more.

The Scrappers added a run in the fourth on Mark Thompson’s sacrifice fly and in the ninth, when Jansy Infante scored on a double play.

Frega (1-1) allowed eight runs, four earned over four innings.

Todd Martin, Ramon Alvarado, Osiel Flores, Thompson and Valdes all had two hits for the Scrappers.

Mahoning Valley opens a six-game homestand tonight against Jamestown at Eastwood Field.

The Indians’ fifth-round draft choice, Christopher Holt, is scheduled to make his professional debut on the mound.
