Sheriff's lieutenant suspended
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lt. Marc L. Masto of the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will serve a two-day unpaid suspension from duty beginning Tuesday for failing to report to his superiors his arrest in an Oct. 29 traffic stop as required by department policy, Sheriff Randall Wellington said Friday.
Masto, 44, of Boardman, pleaded no contest to a charge of reckless operation last month in Columbiana County Municipal Court, and was found guilty, fined 100 and ordered to do 10 days of community service.
The lieutenant was driving north on North Lincoln Avenue near Salem at about 60 mph, then drove in excess of 75 mph while the police officer trying to stop him had the cruiser's emergency lights and siren activated, Perry Township police said. The speed limit is 45 mph on the road.
Masto, who was off duty when the traffic stop occurred, waived his departmental pre-disciplinary hearing and accepted the suspension, Wellington said. Masto has been with the sheriff's department for 21 years and works in the county jail.
