GIRLS BASKETBALL JFK, Rayen and Mooney capture SVC victories
Canfield and Hubbard cruised to victories.
WARREN -- Seniors Samantha Brys and Michelle Chaves scored 13 points apiece Thursday as the Warren JFK High girls basketball team defeated Warren Harding, 55-44, a Steel Valley Conference game .
Brys also had seven of JFK's 25 rebounds, while teammate Amy VanHuffel, also a senior, had two of her team's six assists.
JFK beat Harding earlier, 48-41, the Eagles' only other SVC encounter.
For Harding, Andrea Baldridge a game-high 16 points, while Kamela Bender added 11.
Rayen 83, Chaney 17
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brittany Taylor scored 41 points as Rayen rolled over Chaney.
Taylor also added seven steals and three rebounds, while Tieara Jones added 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Tigers (7-2).
Chaney (3-8) was led by Clenisha Pless with five points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot.
Mooney 63, Wilson 23
YOUNGSTOWN -- In posting its second straight SVC win, the Cardinals built a commanding 35-14 lead by intermission.
Sarah Pelini sparked Mooney with 17 points. Katie Griswold added 12 and Edna Robinson had 10.
Canfield 62, Niles 10
CANFIELD -- The Cardinals (8-0, 4-0 MAC) scored more points in the first quarter then the Red Dragons (0-10, 0-4) did for the entire game.
Anokha Padubridi paced the Cardinals with 16 points. Bryanne Halfhill chipped in with 11 and Kate Popovec finished with 10.
Hubbard 63, Girard 31
GIRARD -- Girard stayed close and trailed only 15-12 after one quarter, but Hubbard (7-4, 3-3) took the reins the rest of the way in the Trumbull Athletic Conference win.
Tressa Scahill had 14 points while Sophie Paddock grabbed six of the Eagles' 31 rebounds.
Senior guard Adrienne Steverson had 13 points for Girard (3-9, 1-5) while teammate Cynthia Walker grabbed eight of the Indians' 23 rebounds.
