YOUNGSTOWN -- Councilman Richard Atkinson, R-3rd, told police he was driving south on Hudson Avenue near Sheridan School when four gunmen jumped out of a black car and began shooting at three men who were walking south on Hudson around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. The councilman said he did not get a good look at the shooters because he ducked when the gunfire began. Police discovered a large bullet hole in the front hood of the Chevrolet Malibu Atkinson was driving and a flat left rear tire, which had also been shot. Officers recovered one slug from the engine block.
I-80 pavement repairs
AUSTINTOWN -- The Ohio Department of Transportation will reduce Interstate 80 eastbound just east of the Meander Reservoir to one lane from 7 p.m. today to 7 a.m. Friday for pavement repairs.
Boil order in Columbiana
COLUMBIANA -- City officials have issued a boil order for the southern portion of the city until further notice. The order came Wednesday after the failure of a valve and affects all properties south of Duquesne Street.
Man wounded by gunfire
WARREN -- A 21-year-old Warren man was wounded by gunfire on the Northwest Side. Antonio Peterman of Laird Avenue Southeast was being treated Wednesday for bullet wounds of the chest and leg in the intensive care unit of Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Police found Peterman unconscious and bleeding inside a car in the 1300 block of Roberts Avenue late Tuesday.
Suspect waives hearing
STRUTHERS -- The man charged with aggravated robbery of a Youngstown-Poland Road business waived his preliminary hearing in municipal court Wednesday, sending the case to a Mahoning County grand jury. Robert Porter IV, 31, Woodland Drive, New Middletown, is accused of the Jan. 1 robbery of the Movie Gallery. He's also charged with robbing the Red Roof Inn, Boardman, the same day.
Teen charged in assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- "I didn't like the way he looked at me so I hit him," a 14-year-old Wilson High School student reportedly said when asked about breaking two teeth in a fellow student's mouth with a punch. The East Ravenwood Avenue boy was issued a juvenile court summons that charges him with assault and released to his mother Tuesday afternoon.
Free flu vaccine
LISBON -- Columbiana County Health Department will offer free flu vaccine to anyone age 3 and older. Flu vaccine will be administered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the health department, 7360 state Route 45.
Mercer County raises
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County commissioners plan to give wage increases of 1.1 percent to elected officials and professional and administrative employees when they meet today. Nonunion technical, clerical and support staff will receive a 20-cent-per-hour raise retroactive to Jan. 1 and 25 additional cents in July. Officials said that the raises given to the nonunion employees are below those given to the union employees who averaged a 2.5 percent increase for 2007. In 2006, employees received raises averaging 2.8 percent.
