Councilman caught in shooting fray

YOUNGSTOWN — Councilman Richard Atkinson, R-3rd, told police he was driving south on Hudson Avenue near Sheridan School when four gunmen jumped out of a black car and began shooting at three men who were walking south on Hudson around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The councilman said he did not get a good look at the shooters because he ducked when the gunfire began.

Police discovered a large bullet hole in the front hood of the Chevrolet Malibu Atkinson was driving and a flat left rear tire, which had also been shot.

Officers recovered one slug from the engine block.
