26 say 'I do' at Big Fat Youngstown Wedding

YOUNGSTOWN -- About 10 minutes of play were left in the first period at the SteelHounds game Saturday and Kim Montgomery was noticeably anxious.

Was it excitement?

"Yes," she said, taking a break from watching the game on monitors in the hall.

Montgomery and Don Howard were one of 13 couples to participate in "My Big Fat Youngstown Wedding" at the Chevrolet Centre. Two couples delivered their vows for the first time, the other 11 renewed theirs. Among those renewing their vows were SteelHounds captain Jeff Christian and his wife, Dorie.

As the first period ended, Christian skated over to his wife and walked her down the makeshift isle with the other couples. He delivered his vows in his skates and uniform. After the ceremony, he didn't even make it back to the locker room without fans approaching for his autograph, still arm-in-arm with Dorie.

The wedding was sponsored by WHOT-FM Hot 101 radio. A.C. McCullough of the HOT-101 Morning Crew officiated.

"The SteelHounds brought it to us," McCullough said. "Kelly [Stevens, his co-host] and I are licensed ministers, so we decided we'd do it. Kelly was out of town this weekend, so I had to do it."

The idea was Bob Hoffman's, the SteelHounds assistant general manager.

"We did this at an old Utah team I worked at. Actually, it was part of a radio promotion. It was huge. We had something like 93 couples come and they were all spaced out on the ice," Hoffman said.

He said he suggested it in Youngstown because they wanted to try some new things this season.

That's what attracted one couple to participate. Montgomery said she and Howard decided to get married on the ice Saturday because it was unique.

"We just thought it was something special, something different," Howard said.

The couple said they have been together for 3 1/2 years. Friends and family attended their first hockey game to see the wedding, they said.

Hoffman said he expects to have another wedding during a SteelHounds game next year.

"I think we're planning on making it an annual event," he said.
