HUBBARD — A city couple is suing the school district, saying the district is responsible for causing their son to miss playing soccer his senior year of high school and costing the family thousands of dollars in legal fees.
Anthony and Susan Greco have filed a civil suit in U.S. District Court in Youngstown, on behalf of their son, who turned 18 on Saturday. They are asking the court for $75,000 plus interest for compensatory damages, $450,000 in punitive damages, attorney fees and any other related costs.
Schools Superintendent Richard Buchenic would not to comment on the situation, referring questions to attorneys handling the case. Calls to the Medina offices of Tomino and Latchney LLC. were not returned.

What were the events leading to his inability to participate? That would seem to be a pretty important part of the story...right?
Yea the events leading to the disqualification does have some bearing on this but, one thing is very obvious. THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!!!!! Those people need to get a life. I remember something about this about a year ago. I just did a search and it turned up nothing, but the people spent all that money because they could. It is just plain stupid to think you were able to force the coach to play your kid. It is stupid and they are stupid. It's coming back to me....I have to think about the reason he was disqualified and I will be back. The long and short of it is they spent the money because they wanted to.
I'm hoping you're not a parent, Rightside, and glad you used the word "stupid" first. That makes me feel less unkind using it to describe YOU as the stupid one here. While you're searching your feeble brain or the internet for the scoop, let me give you just a few facts of the case.
Fact: Those people do have a life.
Fact: They didn't spend the money because they "have it." They spent it because the school district ignored their own policy to cheat a senior in high school out of his final year of soccer. That senior happened to be their son and they defended him.
Fact: Although the district regularly ignores policy, it's normally ignored in favor of the "star" athlete who's caught drinking or drugging. Do you think the coaches who let that happen have ever said, "It's ONLY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!"
Fact: It had absolutely NOTHING to do with playing time.
Fact: The current Hubbard administration (yes, you Mr.) and some faculty seem to believe that the best way to educate children is to control them completely. Why, they even EXPEL "dress code violators!" For goodness sake, my classmates and I fought that fight WAY back in the 70s!
Personally, the whole incident makes me sad, because at one time I was a PROUD graduate of HHS. Now, not so much.
Shame on every district employee and every board member who crawled under a rock and hid when they knew their leader was wrong! You people are all supposed to like kids and work in their best interest. You all need to find new careers!
I am a Hubbard resident and believe what happened here was the young man was eligible according to the State of Ohio but the powers at be said we have a policy that states something else. It was something like the state requires a student athlete to have passed 5 credits in order to participate in High school sports and the Hubbard superintendent said it is our policy that you need 6 credits but they could not produce that written policy anywhere but still would not let the young man play his senior year. So they went to court and the superintendent hired some big law firm that cost somewhere around $30.000 and they LOST. What I don’t understand is this superintendent an idiot? All he had to do is call the parents in and have them sit down call the state and ask is this child eligible if it is yes put him on the field if it is no he can not play, end of story. This had to be a personal vendetta against this family; I can not believe that a supt. and a BOE could be this stupid.. What you have here is a superintendent that thinks he can do what ever he wants, is he going to pick up the bill for the legal fees is the BOE going to pick up the bill for the legal fees (NO) we are, the tax payers, their motto is sue me it doesn’t come out of my pocket. There answer will be our lawyer thought we had a good case PLEASE he gets paid no matter what. I don’t know what happened but I can surmise that these parents were treated with no respect and were told I am the king and that’s they way it is. Lets be honest if anyone hurts your children you will fight with everything you have and especially when your child is right. If they are this reckless with tax payer’s money and how much money has gone out the window that we don’t even know about. Now we have to spend more money on this case because these people are right and they are going to win this case. If I sat on this jury I would rule in favor of this kid. They had nothing in writing, nothing that was board approved, what is it make up the rules as you go along. Missing your senior year might not be a huge deal when you are 60 but at 17 this Childs world must have felt like it ended. And anyone who reads this that is a parent you know you would have done the same thing. I have some real concerns about this school district. They should be building our children up not trying to destroy them.
I guess I just don’t have the mental deficiency that makes me to take High School sports or actually any sports seriously. Why do you think they call it “playing”. I don’t “play” , I have a career, I work, I don’t play. The post after you helped my feeble mind focus and remember that he did not have good enough grades to participate in the sports program. The thing about 5 or 6 credits is just hearsay as far as we now know; litigation will bear out the truth of that matter. The kid and the parents knew the rules going in, and now they expect the school to make an exception when Johnny was failing. If the kid was failing subjects they should have spent that thousands of dollars on tutors. It would have been money better spent on his EDUCATION rather than useless sports. If soccer is so important and they thought he was going to make his living at it, I hate to be bearer of bad news, but soccer is NOT big money here in the USA. Yes, I am a parent of a jock. He was the quarterback when he played high school football and went to a college with a sports scholarship. During his first year of college, he let his grades fall and the school gave him a matter of weeks to bring his grades UP or he would NOT play. I commend the school for their stance. That school has their priorities straight. I will help you with a real simple concept of life. Students go to school to LEARN, not to “play” sports. My son realizes that he has a 1 in 65,000 chance,(that’s .00001%) of being picked up by a pro team and MAYBE make a living from “playing” but a 100% chance of graduating with a degree that will let him make a living from having a career. I told him to straighten up or I would see to it that he comes home! He did just that, he brought his grades up and is playing again this year. SPORTS IS AN OPTION, EDUCATION IS MANDATORY. I did not go to the Athletic Director and tell him how unfair the rules are, and threaten that if my son doesn’t play they will have a losing season, you see the director knows that a winning season is not the reason the kids are there. So you see, this kid’s parents have their priorities screwed up, so why do we expect any different from the kid? We have to tell little Johnny and you that 4 plus 4 equals 8 and always will. Many today will have us believe that 7 is a correct answer too. That is bull. The world is black and white, and we try keep trying to make it gray. I have not changed my position, IT’S HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. Where’s the big paycheck?
Rightside, you need to apply for a position in the Hubbard school district. Your "black and white" attitude is just what they look for! Sorry to hear you had your own children and subjected them to it 24/7. The thing that troubles me most is that it's obvious you know NOTHING of this particular situation, so why don't you move on and annoy someone else.
Well, I only lived in Hubbard for 25 years, (now I don't) and I still follow issues in my old hometown. I graduated from HHS. I know what the papers want us to know and I know a frivilous lawsuit when I see one. Move this discussion over to "community discussions" section, alot more have weighed in on this on my RIGHTSIDE than on your WRONGSIDE. I'm sorry for you that you hold atletics in such high regard, I hope one of your kids become just like a professional athlete, as they are wonderful role models. I see how wonderful they are every night on TV.
Rightside- just would like to know if you've had a lick of fun in your entire life? I have a career- one that I love, respect and allows me to play! I feel so sorry for your view on life - I think your issues may be outside of this debate.
Rightside, I find your posts most disturbing. Not only do you know nothing of the facts of this case, but because you are damning those involved in spite of your ignorance. You obviously suffered some grave indignation at the hands of some jock in your youth, because you're so blinded by the fact that athletics is involved that you're unable to see the big picture here. Just pretend that the studend involved was unjustly kept from the National Honor Society. Does that help?
As far as moving the discussion to any arena full of more ill-informed blow-hards who are always ready to spew vitriol opinions, I, for one, will pass.
