Son, 27, set mother on fire, police say

Published: Sat, September 9, 2006 @ 12:00 a.m.

GALION, Ohio (AP) -- Police said a man threw a flammable substance on his mother and set her on fire, critically injuring her with burns to most of her body.

Police arrested the son, John Petersen, 27, shortly after the fire Wednesday night, and charges were expected against him pending an investigation by prosecutors, Galion police Chief Brian Saterfield said Friday.

It was unclear why the man set the fire at the home he and his mother shared in Galion, about 52 miles north of Columbus, Saterfield said.

"I can certainly say it was unprovoked," he said.

The 54-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was in critical condition Friday at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus with second- and third-degree burns to her face, feet and other parts of her body, police said.
