Academy graduates its 1st class

Young people and city police celebrate the first graduation of the Youngstown Police Department's Youth Police Academy. Above, police Chief Jimmy Hughes congratulates Jaret Spayd, 11, of Youngstown, as he receives his certificate. At right, Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin-Casey, who organized the academy, hugs one of her graduates, Janessa Lewis, 15, of Youngstown. Twenty-eight youths graduated Thursday during ceremonies at the Youngstown Police Department Community Education Center, 1639 Mahoning Ave. The academy was created to form a bond between the city's youths and police.
