Warren reaches deal on 77 Soul license

WARREN -- The city reached a tentative agreement Friday with a woman who asked to transfer the liquor license from the now-defunct 77 Soul club.
City council passed a resolution in June objecting to the transfer of the license from former 77 Soul owner LaShawn Ziegler to Marquita Gary, who plans to open a bar and grille at 2261 N. Park Ave.
However, Gary's attorney Gilbert W.R. Rucker III asked the city to rescind its objection to the license transfer if Gary would agree to certain conditions for her establishment.
Police had been called to the former 77 Soul club on Youngstown Road for shootings and stabbings before the city closed it in February 2004.
The agreement requires Gary to provide security and proper lighting at the Benji Bowns Bar and Grill, said Councilman Alford L. Novak, D-2nd, who sponsored the legislation objecting to the transfer.
Novak said that many residents in the 2nd Ward were concerned that the bar and grille could become a haven for crime.
Council will hold a caucus Wednesday to discuss the tentative agreement. The meeting will be in the council caucus chambers at the Municipal Justice Building, 141 South St. S.E. Anyone interested in discussing the issue is invited to attend.
