Veterans invited for lunch
BOARDMAN -- West Boulevard Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day luncheon from 10:45 a.m. to noon Nov. 10. All local veterans are invited to attend to have lunch with the pupils. The only thing they are being asked to bring is their stories. Anyone interested in attending should call (330) 726-3427 no later than Nov. 8 to make a reservation.
YSU art fundraiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University Student Art Association and Penguin Review, the literary group, will hold a fund-raising event Monday at Cedar's Restaurant/Lounge 23. N. Hazel St. Admission is 5. There will be a poetry slam at 7 p.m., a silent art action from 7 to 10 p.m., live painting to music at 8 p.m. and a Halloween costume contest all night. Bands include "Infamous Priest" at 11 p.m. and "Johnny 3" at midnight. All proceeds benefit the annual publication by the Penguin Review and the Student Art Association.
Literacy conference
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Educational Service Center will hold its annual Trumbull Literacy Conference next Saturday at Lakeview High School. The development conference for K-8 teachers will focus on increasing pupil achievement in reading and writing. There will be three general sessions, each featuring a professional author. Beth Frack, composer and author of children's music, will speak about using music to enhance learning; Lester Laminack, writer and national school consultant, will present "What Happened to Our Common Sense?: Teaching and Learning and Reading and Writing"; and J. Patrick Lewis, children's poet, will speak on art in children's poetry books. Registration is open through Wednesday, and forms are available at the center's Web site at
SRU's 'Internations Week'
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's Office of International Initiatives and the SRU Internations Club will hold "Internations Week" Nov. 5-11, culminating with the annual International Dinner at 7 p.m. Nov. 11. Dinner tickets are 10 for SRU students, 20 for the general public and 6 for children under 12. For tickets, call (724) 738-2057. All other events are free and open to the public. They include: 7 p.m. Nov. 5 -- International Sports Night at the Student Recreation Center; 8 p.m. Nov. 6 -- International Fashion Show in the University Union; 12:30 p.m. Nov. 7 -- International Showcase of arts and artifacts in the University Union; 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 -- International Coffee House in North Hall Fireside Lounge; and 12:30 p.m. Nov. 9 -- International Roundtable, offering a glimpse of life in other nations.
