Outstanding volunteer
Minnie Andrews of Poland has been honored as one of Ohio's outstanding senior citizen volunteers for 2006 by Medical Mutual of Ohio.
When Andrews, 83, retired from teaching school, she was recruited as a teaching volunteer, working with children with disabilities in the Mahoning Valley. She also is activity director for the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and church seniors.
Andrews also served to further the interest of Catholic education. She was chairwoman of the Catholic education scholarship committee through scholarships assisting youth in their education.
As a member of the Youngstown Business and Professional Women, she served as scholarship chairwoman from 1996 to 2006 assisting women achieve their career goals by seeking programming and involvement of neighboring communities.
Andrews also was selected to represent YWCA as the woman of the year 2003-2004.
With the Mahoning Retired Teachers Association, Andrews was awarded Ohio Retired Teachers Association and MRTA honors and received the Ohio greatest volunteer award with 3,089 hours. She has also served as Ohio High School Counselor for five years and PTA president for four schools.
