The Blue Devils, who are ranked second in the state, returned all their runners from last year's team, which finished 15th at the state meet. "We vowed to be stronger this year," said coach Chris Rupe. "This is a fun group of guys who are really overachievers that want to excel. I refer to them as a brotherhood. They act like a bunch of brothers who pull for each other." Maplewood, the defending state champs, finished second at the district meet. Rockets senior Andy Arnio won the individual title, while his talented teammate, senior Andy Morgan, was held out of the meet with a sore rib. Arnio and Morgan finished 1-2 at last year's state meet. Boardman's boys have qualified for the regional meet the past two years. Jake Lape qualified for last year's state meet, while his twin brother, Rick, missed qualifying by one spot last year. Salem senior Patrick Gorby won last Friday's district title and was a member of the Quakers' state title teams the past two years. On the girls side, Salem won last week's district title. The Quakers are the defending state champs in Div .II and are ranked first in the state. "We've worked very hard all year and our goal of going back to state has been to take each meet one step at a time," said Salem's Erin Murphy. Added coach Mary Wilson, "Our kids are incredible. They are all heart, they're dedicated to the team and the sport and they do their best every day." McDonald won last week's district title and has been to the state meet every year since 1999. The Blue Devils have been plagued with injuries and sickness all season. "I told the girls last week, you can use those as a negative or turn it into a positive and take it from there," said McDonald coach Michael Richards, whose team won the Suburban League title earlier in the year. "This season has been a roller coaster for us, but this week our goal is to get to state." South Range senior Kayla Witmer won the individual title at week's district title in Div. III.
