Tennis players fall at state meet

In golf, JFK's Katie Rogner was second and South Range's Ariel Witmer was third.

COLUMBUS -- All of the area's tennis players were defeated Friday at the state tournament at Ohio State.

Stephanie Gula of Howland was eliminated by Ashleigh Witt of Lakota West 6-3, 6-3 in a Division I first-round singles match.

Kim Ezzo of Ursuline was eliminated by Christiana Raymond of Worthington Christian, 6-2, 6-2 in a Div. II first-round match.

Lauren Sullick and Christina Brant of Canfield defeated Jayne Miely and Stacey Cox of Upper Arlington, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in a Div. I first-round doubles match, then lost to Ashley McCall and Emily Pham of Mason, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Megan Bennett and Jessica Mullis of Poland were eliminated by Christina Danosi and Ashley Staub of Columbus School for Girls, 6-1, 6-3 in a Div. II first-round doubles match.

The state tournament continues today at Hilliard Davidson High School.

State golf

COLUMBUS -- Canfield shot a 371 Friday to rest in 11th place in the girls state golf championship.

Junior Danielle Gagliardi shot a 46-44--90 to lead the Cardinals at Ohio State University's Gray golf course.

Jamie Berndt carded a 44-49--93 while in at 94 were Jennifer Hudock (47-47) and Christine Brown (47-47).

The fifth Canfield golfer, senior Samantha Meier, had a 48-49--97.

Warren JFK senior Katie Rogner shot a 40-34--74 for second place among individual participants.

Tied for third was Ariel Witmer of South Range with a 39-39--78.

West Chester Lakota West fired a 318 to take the lead in the girls Division I tournament. Massillon Perry and Cincinnati Ursuline Academy are 21 strokes back.

Lancaster's Allie White, an individual qualifier, is the leader in the race for medalist honors. She shot a 71.

The final 18 holes are scheduled to be played today.
