Niles, Canfield stay in the hunt for the MAC crown

NILES -- Ricardo Beltran scored a pair of touchdowns, leading Niles High to a 28-6 Metro Athletic Conference victory over Salem Friday night.

Beltran, who rushed for 68 yards on 18 attempts, scored from 3 yards out in the first period and again from 7 yards out in the third quarter for the Red Dragons (8-1, 5-1 MAC).

Vince Hites and Zac Stanton also had rushing touchdowns for Niles, which amassed 237 yards on the ground while holding Salem (1-8, 1-5) to minus 7 rushing yards.

Niles remains a game back of league-leading Poland, a 33-6 winner over Campbell.

Cory Rickman had the Quakers' lone touchdown on a 4-yard run. Zac O'Brien completed 11-of-28 passes for 171 yards while Austin Hutton had four receptions for 97 yards for Salem.

Canfield 28,Struthers 7

CANFIELD -- Canfield kept its hopes of sharing the conference championship alive with its convincing win over Struthers.

Christian Smith amassed 167 yards on 16 carries for the Cardinals (7-2, 5-1 MAC). He scored on runs of 33 and 48 yards in the second period as Canfield broke a scoreless tie.

Dan Bana also scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 16 and 32 yards. He finished with 73 yards on eight carries.

Canfield can gain a share of the league title by beating Poland (7-2, 6-0) next week.

Matt Kukura scored from 6 yards out in the fourth period for Struthers' touchdown.

Howland 42,East Liverpool 12

HOWLAND -- Zac McManus and Dante Marsh combined for 257 yards on the ground and five scores in Howland's rout of East Liverpool.

McManus led the way with 146 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns, while Marsh tacked on 111 yards on 18 carries and three scores, including the first two of the game.

Howland (5-4, 4-2 MAC) finished with 335 yards on the ground and 368 in total offense.

Shane Reed had 108 yards on 13 carries and Joey Wines tacked on 68 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown for the Potters (3-6, 2-4). Wines was also 6-of-18 through the air for 60 yards and a touchdown.
