The audience will see the walls come tumbling down.
CANFIELD -- 34west Theater Company presents a one-night-only performance of "Waiting for Joshua" at 6 p.m. Sunday at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road.
The musical depicts the Old Testament account of Joshua and the battle of Jericho. The play is set on the European battlefront, giving audiences a different perspective to the familiar story.
The story shows the friendship of two soldiers in the army of Israel and their struggle with freedom. As they wait for Joshua's command, each man clings to the hope passed down from their forefathers that they will inherit the Promised Land.
Audiences experience Israel's crossing into enemy territory, the spy encounter with Rahab the harlot, and the climactic moment when the walls of Jericho fall to the ground.
Written by 34west playwright Stephen Baldwin, this is the newest addition to the company's repertoire of productions.
"We tried to incorporate all the strengths of our past productions into this one," Baldwin said. "There's plenty of laughter, but also some great moments of reflection."
Baldwin and fellow 34west co-founder Jeffrey Querin present the musical through the eyes of Joshua and his army. Both men play multiple characters ranging from Joshua to a bumbling soldier.
Querin and Baldwin are no strangers to modern productions that contemporize Biblical stories.
34west is known for delivering serious drama with a side of humor. Many of their productions can be seen at Das Dutch Village Inn, Columbiana.
Their past productions of "Cotton Patch Gospel" and "Abraham and Sarah" give humorous insight into the lives of their characters.
As for "Waiting for Joshua," Das Dutch Village Inn host Jacqueline Smith says, "This is one of the strongest productions we've seen. At one moment I was laughing, the next I was on the edge of my seat."
Admission is free, although a free-will offering will be taken. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dessert reception follows. Child care is provided.
