In Division II, Hubbard and Southeast are off to good starts.
STOW -- The Canfield High volleyball team opened the Division I district tournament at Stow High school on Monday with a three-set win over Akron Ellet.
The Cardinals (11-11) ousted Ellet by scores of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-20 and advance to play top-seeded Stow on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Against Ellet, Kalie Luklan had five points and 12 kills; Courtney Rothbauer had 22 points and seven aces; Rachael O'Hara had four points, two aces and 26 assists; and Jackie Nentwick had eight kills and four digs for Canfield.
In the other match, Cuyahoga Falls defeated Akron Firestone by scores of 29-27, 25-11 and 25-16.
BOARDMAN -- Hubbard, co-champions of the Trumbull Athletic Conference, rebounded from last week's loss at Girard, with a three-set win over Rayen at Boardman High.
Lauren Ferguson served 15 points with six aces and made 25 assists as the Eagles (20-3) defeated the Tigers (12-11) by scores of 25-3, 25-6 and 25-13.
Sophie Paddock served 11 points and made seven kills and five blocks while Brittany Lange made 12 kills. Taylor Gasser served seven points with four aces.
For Rayen, Bethany Hines served four points and Nicole Hines served two points with an ace.
In the other match, Southeast (20-3) dismissed Niles (4-19) by scores of 25-8, 25-2 and 25-1.
Meagan Wain served 29 points with three aces and she made a block. Lindsay Speidel served 19 points with two aces and made three kills.
Kelsey Hill served 15 points with five aces and made 24 assists. Jennifer Gahagan made 18 kills and three blocks while Nikky Murphy made five kills and three blocks.
For Niles, Allie Moss served two points with an ace.
On Wednesday, Southeast plays Chaney at 5 p.m., followed by Hubbard vs. Howland.
