McDONALD -- Village schools Superintendent Michael Wasser and board members extended thanks to safety forces, county responding agencies, Haz-Mat and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for their help in evacuating both schools in two separate airborne irritant scares.
Board member Atty. William Roux said the first occurred Feb. 2 at Roosevelt Elementary School, when pupils complained of facial irritation and breathing problems from fumes of an unidentified source. The school was evacuated.
High school students were evacuated March 2 for a substance in the air that turned out to be chlorine that caused headaches for six or seven students.
Roux and board member Robert Jones said the evacuations went smoothly. Roux thanked the teaching and nonteaching staff for their help in both matters.
Levy committee
In other business at Monday's board meeting, Wasser said he is forming a levy committee and will be making several phone calls in the next few days. He said he doesn't think the community forums for the sports complex levy on the November ballot were well-attended, so he plans to distribute a seven- or eight-page information packet in mid-April.
The board is seeking voter approval for a 4.5-mill continuous levy on the May 2 ballot to raise $247,914 per year to pay for a new sports complex for the district. Two mills of that -- $63,000 -- are designated for general permanent improvements to replace a levy set to expire this year.
The board also established the William Rea Memorial Library Fund at Roosevelt Elementary School. A former superintendent of McDonald Schools, Rea died in February. Donations toward the fund are at $315 to date.
The board also approved the 2006-07 school calendar. Wasser said teachers will come in for an in-service day Aug. 23, and pupils will start classes Aug. 28. Christmas break will be Dec. 21 to Jan. 2, and Easter vacation will be April 6 to April 15. The last day of school for pupils will be June 6.
