HELPING HANDS Volunteering
Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Easter Seals Winter Walk: Volunteers are needed to walk or assist walkers. The event is at 9 a.m. March 18 at Boardman Park.
Lake To River Science Day: Judges are needed to evaluate high school science projects. They need not be knowledgeable in science. This will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday on the YSU campus.
March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon: Assistants are needed to help the walkers with registration and distribution of food, water and premiums. This will be at 9 a.m. April 29 at Packard Park, Warren.
United Way Youth Day of Caring: High school juniors and seniors are needed to participate in this day of community service April 29.
Potter's Wheel (Warren): Tutors are needed to work with the adult women.
VSA Stitchers: Volunteers are wanted to knit, crochet or sew items for hospitals and nursing homes. This can be done in the home or with a group. Donations of yarn or material are always needed.
Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program: Training begins the end of March for anyone who would like to become an advocate for neglected or abused children.
Arthritis Foundation: Is looking for people who would be interested in being trained as public speakers for this group.
Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation: Is in need of someone who could attend their monthly meetings, take notes and mail them out.
Help Hotline Crisis Center: Training begins Monday for people who are interested in providing telephone reassurance, referral and crisis intervention.
Give Back Tutoring: Tutors are especially needed Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This is for all grades in math and reading.
Boardman Specialty Care: Volunteers are needed for receptionist duties, to be companions to residents and as activity assistants.
Trumbull Mobile Meals: Drivers are needed, especially in the Niles area.
Mill Creek MetroParks: Training to be garden tour guides will begin in April.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: Caring volunteers are needed to help Senior Citizens remain independently in their homes. They can provide grocery shopping, trips to doctor's offices or friendly visits.
