Gary Glitter gets prisonin child-molestation case
VUNG TAU, Vietnam -- A Vietnamese court sentenced former British glam rocker Gary Glitter to three years in prison Friday for molesting two Vietnamese girls, with the judge condemning him for "disgusting and sick" behavior.
Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was found guilty of committing obscene acts with two girls, ages 10 and 11, at his rented seaside villa in southern Vung Tau last year.
The former rock star showed no emotion while the verdict was read but threw the court into disarray by proclaiming his innocence afterward.
"I haven't done anything. I'm innocent. It's a conspiracy by you know who," Glitter shouted, apparently referring to British tabloid newspapers that had tracked down his presence in Vietnam.
Reporters and onlookers, allowed into the courthouse in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province to hear the verdict following the closed two-day trial, pressed toward Glitter in a scene of pandemonium as police fended them off and escorted him out of the building.
The judge said Glitter would be deported to Britain after serving his sentence. He was also required to pay compensation of $320 to each girl's family and court fees.
Glitter, who had faced up to seven years in prison, was given the minimum sentence of three by the court. The judge later explained that among the factors contributing to the lighter sentence was the $2,000 each that Glitter paid to each girl's family as "compensation" in December.
He has 15 days to appeal his sentence. His attorney, Le Thanh Kinh, said Glitter would be eligible for parole in a year, after he serves one-third of his time.
Being on Playboy coverirritates actress Alba
LOS ANGELES -- Jessica Alba is demanding that Playboy pull its March issue, saying she didn't agree to be on the cover and that the image may mislead readers into thinking she appears nude or partially nude in the magazine.
The cover shows the 24-year-old actress in a bikini, next to the headline "25 Sexiest Celebrities." Besides demanding that Playboy stop distributing the March issue, Alba is asking for "monetary settlement" for damages to her reputation and career.
In a Feb. 23 letter obtained by The Smoking Gun Web site, Alba's lawyers told Playboy the magazine used a photo of Alba meant to promote the movie "Into the Blue" without her consent. Sony Pictures, which owns the image, sent a separate letter alleging that Playboy initially offered to pay Alba to pose for the cover of the issue. When her publicist refused, Playboy resorted to using "false pretenses" to obtain the promotional shot, according to the letter.
"Playboy has violated my personal rights and blatantly misled the public who might think I had given them permission to put me on the cover when I didn't," Alba said in a statement.
A Playboy spokeswoman said Alba was placed on the cover after being chosen "sexiest star of the year" by its readers.
