Pirates topple Manatee College, 8-1

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Oliver Perez pitched two perfect innings and J.J. Furmaniak hit a three-run homer to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past Manatee Community College 8-1 Wednesday.
Perez struck out three and appeared in command of all his pitches in his only appearance before leaving the Pirates to represent Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.
"I felt really good," he said.
Reliever Salomon Torres allowed a homer to Manatee sophomore Kevin Clark in the fourth inning for the first run of the game, but Pittsburgh scored four times in the bottom half on only one hit, an RBI single by Gookie Dawkins.
It marked the eighth consecutive year the Pirates beat Manatee.
Pittsburgh opens its Grapefruit League schedule today against the Washington Nationals in Viera. Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Pirates.
