Women's tennis
BOWLING GREEN -- Youngstown State continued its fall campaign at Bowling Green for a weekend invitational. The Penguins played seven rounds of singles and four rounds of doubles against Bowling Green, Buffalo, Ferris State, Toledo, Wright State and Xavier.
At the No. 2 spot, YSU sophomore Emily Thayer defeated Bowling Green's Erica Wolfe 6-3, 7-5. Thayer also teamed with sophomore Michelle Fuleky at No. 2 doubles defeating Bowling Green's Andrea Meister-Andrea Volle 8-2. Whitney Thomas and Andrea Dixon competed at No. 2 doubles defeating Toledo's Sarah Thompson-Sarah Vander Molen 8-4.
Golf postponed
VIENNA -- Due to inclement weather, Monday's Division II boys sectional golf tournament at Candywood Golf Course was postponed until today.
County cross countryat Austintown Park
AUSTINTOWN -- Due to another event being held at Canfield Fairgrounds, today's Mahoning County cross country championships have been moved to Austintown Township Park on Kirk Road.
Race times are: 4:30 p.m. for girls varsity, 5:05 p.m. for boys varsity, 5:40 p.m. for girls middle school and 6:05 p.m. for boys middle school.
Springfield baseball
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Township Baseball Association will elect officers on Oct. 30. Those interested should contact Joe Mersol at (330) 565-3328 for more details.
SVC player of week
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joe Underwood, the Ursuline High football team's tight end and linebacker, is this week's Steel Valley Conference Player of the Week.
Against St. Thomas Aquinas, Underwood made eight solo tackles and assisted on three others. He also had a quarterback pressure.
On offense, he caught a pass for a 17-yard gain and earned an 88 percent grade for blocking.
Santisi wins SVC golf
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline High golfer Joe Santisi averaged 36.4 strokes in Steel Valley Conference play to earn league medalist honors.
Paul Cene of Ursuline averaged 37.4.
He was followed by Warren JFK's Scott Difford (37.6), Mooney's Jon Hamarik (38.2), Mooney's Joe St. George (38.4) and Warren JFK's Nick Moody (39).
Ursuline finished 18-2 in league play, followed by Mooney at 15-5. The Irish won their second straight conference title.
PAC names Strouse
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College senior defensive end Kevin Strouse was named Presidents' Athletic Conference defensive player of the week after posting a school-record four quarterback sacks in the Tomcats' 41-7 win over Bethany.
Strouse finished with five total tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
The Tomcats (3-0, 1-0) will take on sixth-ranked Washington & amp; Jefferson (4-0) Saturday in Washington, Pa.
Flag football
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joe's Pros won the Quick Six 4-on-4 Flag Football Summer Invitational Tournament championship.
Team members are Joe Malys, Lance Thornton, Lionel Thornton, Herman Jackson, Shawn Marshal, Jay Walker and Anthony Walker.
Teams from Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, New York and Maryland competed at the Youngstown tournament.
Joe's Pros also defeated the Buffalo Bulls, 27-7, to win the GEO Sports Invitational Tournament in Warren.
Indians' Hafner namedplayer of the week
CLEVELAND -- Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner was named American League player of the week Monday for hitting six home runs and driving in 16 runs last week.
Hafner batted .385 (10-for-26) in seven games while leading both leagues in homers and RBIs over that span.
He homered in each game of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox and in six straight games overall.
The Indians went 5-2 last week.
Hafner also was named player of the week on July 11 and was the league's player of the month in June.
