The government's emergency coordinators are crediting better stockpiling of supplies, early evacuations and more military muscle for saving lives during Hurricane Rita. Also, President Bush pushed Sunday to give the Pentagon a larger role in future disasters.
Signs that Gulf Coast energy producers survived Hurricane Rita largely unscathed sent oil futures falling Sunday. Analysts, however, said consumers are likely to face tight supplies and higher prices at least until refineries come back on line.
