Answers to weekly quiz:
Q. Vulnerable, as South you hold:
xA Q J 10 7 6 uK J 9 8 2 vVoid wQ 6
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1u Pass 1x Pass
2u Pass ?
What do you bid now?
A. You might try to investigate with cue-bids, but how do you get them started? For our money, we would simply take a stab at six hearts. Even if we have two fast club losers, there is always the chance you won't get an opening club lead. Those who play splinter bids might find it easier to get there after a jump response of four diamonds on the first round to show shortage in the suit, but we dislike that action with a void in the suit.
Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:
uQ 7 6 3 u8 vA K 10 7 6 4 w9 5
The bidding has proceeded:
SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST
Pass Pass 1x Pass
?
What do you bid now?
A. Your hand is too strong for any sort of spade raise. The only way to describe your hand is with a fit-showing jump shift to three diamonds. That is forcing, and not only shows a hand that has improved to a sound opening bid, and wants to be in game in spades, but is interested in slam.
Q. Vulnerable, you hold:
x7 6 uVoid vA K 10 7 6 3 wA Q 10 9 3
Your right-hand opponent opens the bidding with one spade. What action do you take?
A. We are not enamored with the Unusual No Trump, but even if we were we think this hand is too good for that action. We would simply overcall two diamonds, intending to show clubs next if we get the chance.
Q. Vulnerable as South you hold:
xA Q 8 7 4 2 u9 8 5 vQ 6 3 w7
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1u Pass 1x Pass
2x Pass ?
What do you bid now?
A. This is something of a crap shoot, A game try of three diamonds might work out well, as might a general invitation of three spades, but we would as soon just go for broke and jump to four spades.
Q. Not vulnerable, as South you hold:
x8 7 5 3 uK Q 10 5 v8 5 w9 5 4
The bidding has proceeded:
NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST
1D Pass 1H Pass
3D Pass ?
What action do you take?
A. Partner's jump rebid in his original suit, while strongly invitational, is not forcing, and you did as much as the law will allow by squeezing out a response at your first turn. Pass.
