Workshop planned for stream monitoring

CANFIELD -- Local citizens, families, students, teachers and community groups are invited to learn more about stream monitoring at 10 a.m. Saturday at Poland Village Town Hall.
The workshop is part of the Water Watcher Volunteer Stream Monitoring Project. Volunteer water watcher teams from local businesses and organizations can donate about two hours of their time every three months to monitor the health of their local streams.
Volunteers are trained in a simple procedure to assess the health of a stream by counting the animals living in a particular section of it.
Using a network of volunteers to monitor streams means that more data can be collected than if any single group or agency attempted to monitor independently.
Any group interested in attending should register before Sept. 9. To register for the program or for more information, contact Deborah Solak, watershed coordinator, at Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District, (330) 533-2231.
