Howland got its first victory, a 42-7 win over Erie Central.
SALEM -- J.J. Johnson ran for four touchdowns and rushed for 147 yards in 30 carries while quarterback Tom Jesko also played well, to power Salem High past United, 42-8, Friday night.
Johnson scored on dashes of 4 and 3 yards and on a pair of 1-yard plunges, as the Quakers (2-0) scored 21 points each in the second and third quarters to build a 42-0 lead.
Jesko passed for 169 yards on 7-for-13, including a 30-yard TD pass to Tyler Pierce.
Derek Ball added 52 yards rushing in 13 carries to reinforce the Quakers, while Brian Wright was a perfect 6-for-6 in the extra-point department.
Codey Baker accounted for United's eight points on a 3-yard TD run and on a conversion pass from Jimmy Phillis.
Brian Phillips was 6-for-16 passing for 59 yards for United (1-1), while Jordan Wrask rushed for 33 yards in five carries.
Howland 42,Erie Central 7
HOWLAND -- Lance Smith rushed 10 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (1-1).
Brian Albani got the Tigers rolling early with a pair of touchdown receptions from Ben Leece covering 51 and 10 yards.
Leece hit on five of 12 passes for 113 yards.
After Smith burst through for a 63-yard touchdown, Leece ran it in from the 4 to make it 28-0 at the break.
Another Smith score increased Howland's lead to 35-0.
Howland had more first downs, 13-4, and rushed for 231 yards on 25 carries.
Alliance 37, Niles 21
ALLIANCE -- Charles Babb completed 9 of 19 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns -- all to Troy Pascley -- to lead Alliance in a non-conference game.
The Aviators, last year's Metro Athletic Conference champions who are now in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference, rolled up a 24-6 first quarter lead to take control. Pascley caught five passes for 74 yards and Chris Bivins added 13 carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns.
Tyler Taylor gained 29 yards on six carries and scored twice for Niles (1-1), which finished second to the Aviators in the MAC last season. Taylor scored on a 4-yard return off a blocked punt in the first quarter then added a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Joe Razzano hit 7 of 15 passes for 57 yards but threw four interceptions. Nate Ganyard carried 11 times for 58 yards and a TD.
Warren JFK 34,Struthers 21
STRUTHERS -- Tony Elzy ran 23 times for 181 yards as Kennedy took a 27-0 halftime lead in a non-conference game.
Mike Pissini added seven carries for 21 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles (2-0), who outgained Struthers 231-146 on the ground. J.J. Townsend scored a rushing touchdown and also found James Broadbent for a 15-yard touchdown. Townsend completed 5 of 13 passes for 92 yards, while Broadbent had three receptions for 55 yards.
Justin Penson ran 18 times for 135 yards and a touchdown to lead Struthers (0-2). Quarterback Aaron Young added a 1-yard touchdown on the ground.
