SCRAPPERS Team sees its hopes take a dip

Mahoning Valley's 32-35 record doesn't bode well for a playoff spot.
BATAVIA, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers saw their hopes for another playoff appearance take a serious dip here Wednesday night, falling to the Batavia Muckdogs 9-1 in a New York-Penn League game.
The Muckdogs used two innings to do their damage, scoring five times in the second inning and four more in the seventh.
The Scrappers (32-35) scored their only run in the eighth inning. They fell 51/2 games behind division-leading Auburn. Auburn's game against Jamestown on Wednesday was rained out.
The Scrappers had trouble against Muckdog starting pitcher Scott Mitchinson, getting just three hits through seven innings before Jose Chavez and Trevor Mortensen hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the eighth inning to plate their only run.
Kevin Dixon (3-5) started for the Scrappers and allowed five runs in the second to suffer the loss. Nelson Hiraldo allowed three of the four runs in the Muckdog seventh.
Chavez and Mortensen had four of the eight hits for the Scrappers.
Clay Harris had four hits to lead the Muckdogs, who totaled 14 on the night. Jordan Szabo had two hits and drove in four runs, including a bases-loaded triple in the second inning.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader tonight with the first game slated for 6 p.m.
