SCT Superstar on search for local vocal talent
SALEM -- Salem Community Theatre will again host SCT Superstar, a vocal talent competition open to all ages from kindergarten up. Contestants will compete in four age groups: kindergarten to fourth grade, fifth to eighth grade, ninth to 12th grade and adults. Registration deadline is June 30; fee is $20. The initial audition will take place July 18 when the field will be narrowed to 10 finalists in each age group. The final competition will be open to the public and will take place on the SCT stage Aug. 12-13. It will also be aired on PBS. For more information, call the theater at (330) 332-9688.
Youngstown Italian Fest
CANFIELD -- Entertainers for the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest July 29-31 at Canfield Fairgrounds will be Lena Prima, daughter of the late Louie Prima, and John Pizzi, a Italian comic and ventriloquist from New Jersey. Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkins on tour
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jonathan Richman and longtime drummer Tommy Larkins will perform at Nyabinghi Dance Hall on June 21 as part of a promotional tour for their latest album, "Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love." Richman came onto the music scene in the 1970s when he formed the Modern Lovers. The group's raw minimalist sound and emotionally forthright songs helped to lay the groundwork for punk rock. After his performance here, he'll play the Lime Spider in Akron on June 22 before heading west.
'Wicked Broadway'
YOUNGSTOWN -- Center State Performance and Production and the Oakland Center for the Arts will present "Wicked Broadway," a musical tribute to the villains and vamps of the Broadway stage Aug. 26-28 at the Oakland, downtown. 'Gilligan's Island' musical
ALLIANCE -- Carnation City Players' next production, "Gilligan's Island, The Musical," opens Friday at the Firehouse Theater downtown, 450 E. Market St., and continues with performances Saturday and June 24-26. Concert band features Dana School professors
WARREN -- Tuba soloist John Turk and drum soloist Joseph Parlink will be featured at tonight's performance of the W.D. Packard Concert Band at 7 at the South Lawn Band Shell at Packard Music Hall, Mahoning Avenue. Turk will solo in "Daniel In the Lion's Den" and play with tubists Wesley O'Connor, Boardman High School associate band director, and Belinda Yaksich, Dana graduate and Kent State University graduate student, in Leroy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday." Parlink will solo in "Themes Like Old Times."
'Private Lives'
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Victorian Players, 702 Mahoning Ave., will present the Noel Coward play "Private Lives" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. next Sunday, 7:30 p.m. June 24-25 and 2 p.m. June 26. The play follows Elyot and Amanda, once married and now honeymooning with new spouses at the same hotel, who meet by chance, reignite the old spark and impulsively pair up.
