SHARON, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University, in conjunction with the Sharon City School District, will provide graduate courses for teachers in Sharon starting in mid-June.
The university's graduate course leads to a master of science in education with a reading specialist certification.
The program will be cost-effective to local teachers, according to Dr. Suzanne Rose. Rose will teach the Sharon courses.
"Because the courses are being offered off the main campus, there is a reduction in the fees that are charged to participating students," she said.
Rose also said the university will provide books for purchase at the first class session so students will not have buy them from the main campus.
The university invited teachers from all area school districts to enroll.
Students also may choose to complete the reading specialist certification alone, which requires the completion of seven courses and passing scores on the state certification test.
The initial three-credit class, Foundations of Literacy, will meet June 13-17 at Case Avenue Elementary School. The follow-up class, Reading Programs in the Elementary School, will meet June 20-24.
