The policy committee also appointed its sixth member at its meeting.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County's Reuse and Recycling Division is providing free pickup of paper products and publications to county businesses for recycling purposes.
James Petuch, director of the division, better known as the Green Team, said it's the first time the division has offered the service to county businesses.
The division's policy committee approved the service at its meeting Tuesday.
Petuch is determined to increase the county's recycling rate, which is at about 9 1/2 percent. He said he has about three years to get the rate up to the minimum state standard of 25 percent. Petuch would like to go above that standard, he has said.
Petuch said Green Team personnel will pick up a county business' paper, newspapers, magazines and other periodicals for free.
Petuch said the Green Team won't pick up cardboard, as that is something being recycled by private industry, and "we don't want to interfere with what they are doing."
The recycling director said county businesses can call the Green Team office at (330) 740-2060 to request the free pickup.
In other business, the policy committee also approved a plan to add 12 drop-off recycling sites throughout the county, including four in Youngstown.
The committee also appointed Tom Yanko, owner of Associated Paper Stock Inc. in North Lima, as the board's industry/business representative to fill a term that expires Oct. 28.
The committee oversees the recycling division's programs. It is made up of four permanent members and three members representing interested parties. The four permanent members appoint the representatives who then serve two-year terms.
Petuch said the committee's seventh slot, the public representative position, remains unfilled, but four county residents have applied to fill it. Interviews with the four will start at 8:30 a.m. July 12, Petuch added. The uncompensated slot has been vacant since March 31.
Regular policy committee meetings are usually on the first Tuesday of each month at the Green Team office, 108 Westchester Drive, Austintown.
