Three productions are scheduled for November, February and May.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Broadway Series returns to the Edward W. Powers Auditorium for the 2005-06 season with three national touring productions -- "Blast!," "Oklahoma!" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." All performances will be at 8 p.m.
"Blast!," the 2001 Tony Award-winner for Best Special Theatrical Event, will kick off the series Nov. 14-15. Born on the athletic fields across the nation and steeped in the tradition of outdoor pageantry, "Blast!" is music in motion. For years, theatrical musicians have been trapped in the pit. Throwing away their musical stands and chairs, "Blast!" musicians come on stage to create a new musical and theatrical experience. An experience that combines brass and percussion instruments with a visual color guard ensemble of spinning and manipulating flags, rifles and sabers set against a background of dramatic lighting and intricate choreography, "Blast!" is a new musical genre. The performers are exceptionally talented musicians and finely tuned athletes who can do a one-handed cartwheel or run backwards while staying in formation and playing their instrument. This high-powered, cutting-edge show promises to be one the likes of which Youngstown has never before seen.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" -- the show that changed the American musical forever -- comes sweeping into Youngstown Feb. 6-7. This initial collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein is the tale of the pioneering men and women who once tilled the land and tended the cattle of the American Southwest.
Such songs as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "Many a New Day," "People Will Say We're in Love," "Out of My Dreams" and the title song "Oklahoma" bring out the show's power and passion.
Thoroughly Modern Millie
"Thoroughly Modern Millie," winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best New Musical, concludes the series May 1-2. The high-spirited musical romp is based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name starring Julie Andrews. This bright new Broadway extravaganza takes place in 1922 during the time of jazz, speakeasies and moonshine. Midwestern girl Millie Dillmount makes her way to New York City in search of love and a modern marriage rewriting all the rules of love along the way. Frisky flappers dancing the Charleston, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, make for a perfectly crafted show of madcap merriment with such oldies as "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie."
