'Universal Idols' wanted

YOUNGSTOWN -- "Universal Idols," the Mahoning Valley's version of "American Idol," will be presented June 27 at Universal Cafe at First Unitarian Church, corner of Elm and Illinois, just north of Youngstown State University. The competition will be for cash prizes. Auditions will be from 6-9 p.m. June 13. A karaoke machine will be provided; participants must provide the CD and a $5 entry fee.

Universal Cafe will take place on Monday evenings during the summer. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the program begins at 7. Suggested donation is $3. Light refreshments will be served.

String Cheese Incident

CUYAHOGA FALLS -- The String Cheese Incident will headline the BIG Summer Classic 2005 at Blossom Music Center, 1145 West Steels Corner Road, at 3 p.m. July 17 (doors open at 1 p.m.). Tickets are $37.50, reserved; $27, lawn; $25, general admission. All ages are welcome.

The traveling festival, which will launch with two shows at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre July 2 and 3, will make 14 stops throughout the United States during July, visiting cities such as Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. BIG Summer Classic will feature a slightly rotating cast of some of today's most vital touring acts, including Keller Williams, Michael Franti & amp; Spearhead, Yonder Mountain String Band, Umphrey's McGee and New Monsoon. 'Voices of the Holocaust'

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- "Voices of the Holocaust" will be performed at the New Castle Playhouse, 202 E. Long Ave., at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Tickets are available by calling (724) 662-2882. The play is written by Scott McKenzie and Westminster College students.

Rock 'n' roll review

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Van-Dells Rock 'n' Roll Review will perform Friday at ITAM Post 3, 115 S. Meridian Road. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 and the show at 7:30. Cost is $35; senior citizens and groups are discounted. The musical-comedy act has presented its salute to the music and artists of the '50s and '60s in Reno, Nevada; Las Vegas; Aruba; and Atlantic City, N.J.

Reggae at Cedars

YOUNGSTOWN -- Cedars Cafe, 23 N. Hazel St., downtown, will celebrate the summer season Friday, with national touring reggae band Jah Creation out of Wilmington, N.C.

Admission is $5 for anyone 21 years old or older.
