AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown sits at the crossroads of several major highways: I-76, I-80, the Ohio Turnpike and state Routes 11 and 46.
The township also sits at the crossroads of a newly formed partnership between a recently built hotel and a new minor-league hockey team, the Youngstown SteelHounds.
Country Inn and Suites Youngstown West held its grand opening Wednesday afternoon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
"We came together in the partnership," said Sheree Moore, regional director of sales.
The SteelHounds also held a press conference at the hotel. SteelHounds general manager George Manias said the Country Inn would be the official hotel of the SteelHounds.
"When visiting teams come to Youngstown, I want them to have a good impression of Youngstown," he said.
Manias said most Central Hockey League teams are based far from Youngstown. Each individual CHL team is responsible for its host housing.
"Our goal is to make Youngstown their home," said hotel director of operations Janet Perry.
A hopeful plan
Meander Hospitality Management owns the hotel, as well as the Best Western Meander Inn, Hampton Inn Youngstown West and Winston's Tavern.
The Best Western will host the SteelHounds' training camp and pre-season functions, while Winston's Tavern will host promotional events.
"We have given the community something to believe in," Moore said.
Country Inn & amp; Suites Youngstown West is located on Route 46, south of Interstate 80 and west of Austintown.
The 45,452-square-foot hotel features an indoor pool, an outdoor courtyard and conference rooms. It houses 65 suites. Construction started in the summer of 2004.
