YOUNGSTOWN -- The school construction projects under way in the city came into sharper focus Tuesday, with a series of color and black-and-white schematics telling much of the story.
During their meeting Tuesday, school board members heard presentations by architects outlining features of two district schools to be built and another undergoing renovations.
The schools discussed were the new North and Mary Haddow elementary schools, and the presentations also outlined the renovations at Kirkmere Elementary School.
Summer Barker of MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown said the new North Elementary will have classrooms for special-needs pupils as well pre-kindergarten and kindergarten rooms. Other features of the school, which will be built on Mariner Avenue on Youngstown's East Side, include a drop-off area to accommodate seven buses, as well as a media center with a computer lab.
The 54,000-square-foot school will have a 450-pupil capacity and is slated to open in fall 2007.

Board members were shown an illustration of the new Mary Haddow Elementary School. That school, which will also be on the East Side, will have room for about 350 pupils and will be around 45,000 square feet, said Tony Direnzo, the district's executive director of business affairs.
The board also saw several floor plans depicting what a fully renovated Kirkmere will look like. Work being done there includes building a new 7,000-square-foot gym, renovating the media center and redoing the heating, air-conditioning and sprinkler systems. Exterior projects include adding parking to the front of the facility, as well as new entrances.
The 59,000-square-foot school should be ready to re-open by fall 2006, Direnzo predicted.
Direnzo also gave an update on other new school construction, and on existing schools which will be occupying new buildings. They are:
UThe new West Elementary School, on Schenley Avenue on Youngstown's West Side. It's scheduled for this fall.
UWilliamson Elementary School on Youngstown's South Side, set for December.
UPaul C. Bunn Elementary School, Sequoya Drive on the South Side, fall 2007.
