Summer Fun Fest
HUBBARD -- The city's second annual Summer Fun Fest will be today, Saturday and Sunday in the parking lot of the Municipal Building. Today's events start at 4 p.m. and will feature a parade starting at 7 p.m. The St. Patrick cheerleaders will perform at 8 p.m. and the band Fuzzy Dice will play at 9 p.m. Saturday's schedule includes the Hubbard High cheerleaders at 6:30 p.m., followed by the band Time Warp at 8. Sunday's activities include a watermelon-eating contest at 2 p.m. and a quiz show at 6. Local entertainer Rod Coonce will perform at 8. Fun Fest hours are 4-11 p.m. Friday and 1-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Scrap tire program
McDONALD -- The village will have a scrap tire program Aug. 1-14. Residents may drop off tires at the village garage on Second Street. Curbside pickup will be available on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8 only.
Cosmetology students to show off skills at fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fairgoers in Canfield this fall will be able to sample some of the hands-on skills learned by students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. Students in the center's cosmetology program will be available to give manicures, pedicures and facials in the educational displays area at the Canfield Fair Aug. 31-Sept. 5, Superintendent Roan Craig told the center's board at its meeting this week. Craig also reported increased enrollment at the center, with 657 students enrolled this year -- 289 seniors and 368 juniors. In other business, the board renewed an agreement with the Mahoning County Educational Services Center to provide special education aides to the career center for an anticipated $180,000.
Celtic Festival on Sunday
LEETONIA -- The Leetonia/Washingtonville Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Celtic Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wick Park. The festival will feature Scottish, Irish and Welsh cultures. The MacCallum Highlander Pipes and Drums, Fey Fire, The Mickey's and other entertainers will perform. Vendors will sell ethnic wares and food. The festival will also feature the 5 p.m. Kilted Mile Run. Participants can register all day, and kilts are optional. For additional information, contact Heather MacNaughton at (330) 427-1600.
Turner Road to close
CANFIELD -- Turner Road between Herbert Road and Gibson Road in Canfield Township will be closed Tuesday through July 29 to replace a culvert. Traffic will be detoured along Gibson, Gault, Palmyra and Herbert roads.
American Legion dinner
KINSMAN -- The American Legion Post 506 Auxiliary will have steak fries from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and on Aug. 20 in the shelter house at the Legion Hall, state Route 87. Cost is $10 for steak, baked potato, salad, dessert and coffee.
Patrolling for violations
The OVI Task Force will be conducting saturation patrols for motorists driving while impaired today and Saturday in Boardman, Canfield and Austintown. Austintown and Canfield police departments and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will be on patrol, enforcing a zero tolerance for OVI offenders and those not wearing safety belts. Funding for the extra patrols is available through a grant from Ohio Department of Public Safety/Governor's Highway Safety Office and the U.S. Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Rock On," a concert featuring eight bands, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Catholic Church on South Avenue in Boardman. Admission is $5, and proceeds will benefit the Mahoning Valley Ulster Project.
National Night Out
YOUNGSTOWN -- Activities observing National Night Out's 19th anniversary will take place Aug. 2 at Wick Park. A march against crime will begin at 4:30 p.m. starting from Elm Street and Madison Avenue to Wick Park, followed by a picnic in the park from 5 to 9 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
