The 19-year-old is charged with criminal homicide in the death of his girlfriend.
LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) -- Authorities said a man charged Thursday in the death of his girlfriend a year ago told friends that he killed her, threw her body out of the window of their apartment and then set it on fire in a remote area.
Micah Stewart, 19, who was in Lancaster County prison awaiting trial on unrelated charges, was charged with criminal homicide in the death of 19-year-old Cortney Fry.
Lancaster County District Attorney Donald Totaro, who announced the arrest at a news conference, said the couple had a "very strained relationship."
What allegedly happened
According to an affidavit filed with the arrest warrant, Angelica Rivera, the girlfriend of Stewart's father, told a grand jury that Stewart had said on several occasions that he killed Fry.
According to Rivera, Stewart said that he and Fry got into a fight in the Columbia apartment they shared in July 2004 about two weeks after Fry had delivered a baby daughter.
Stewart said that when Fry tried to leave, he grabbed her from behind, placed his hand over her mouth and dragged her away from the door, Rivera said. Stewart said Fry was dead when he released her and he then threw her body out the window, she said.
