Few things give a house as much character as wainscots, deep crown moldings and other kinds of trim.

Jay Silber shows homeowners how to have a house with all the trimmings in "New Decorating with Architectural Trimwork," an expanded edition of his earlier book.

The book contains installation instructions for various types of millwork as well as plenty of photos and ideas for beefing up a house's trim. By its very nature, trim work tends to lend a traditional look to a home, but Silber offers ideas for a variety of architectural styles.

"New Decorating with Architectural Trimwork" is published by Creative Homeowner and is priced at $19.95 in softcover.

Block out mosquitoeswith removable curtain

Screening your porch isn't the only way to keep mosquitoes away. Atlanta entrepreneurs Kurt and Elizabeth Jordan have created removable curtains that provide a bug barrier without permanent screens. The curtains are made of knitted polyester and come in white, ivory or black. They install easily with Velcro or curtain hooks and can be cleaned in a washing machine.

Mosquito Curtains cost $7.50 to $8.50 a linear foot and can be ordered at www.mosquitocurtains.com or (866) 622-0916.

High-powered washerworks wonders at home

Squirt away grime on everything from the grill to the garage floor with Ryobi's model RY30080 gas-powered pressure washer.

The complete cleanup kit, with a commercial grade 7-horsepower easy-start Subaru engine, has a fold-and-store bucket, a wand-caddy and five quick-connect spray nozzles.

With a maximum pressure of 3,000 pounds per square inch and a water flow of 2.7 gallons per minute, no driveway, boat, fence, deck, RV or exterior siding is out of cleaning range.

It even collapses to less than 2-by-2 feet for storage.

Cost is $499 at Home Depot.

Online color consulting

Glidden has a new online feature that aims to ease the stress of sorting through paint colors and imagining how they'll look in an actual room.

Go to www.glidden.com and click on "color consultant." A nine-step process will steer you toward a main color, accents and trim, then let you see results on a sample room.

Glidden paint is sold at The Home Depot.

In-cabinet lighting

Install in-cabinet lighting to make it easier to find items. If you have glass-paneled cabinets in the kitchen, this type of lighting will also provide a great effect while bringing additional illumination to the room.

Lighting in the kitchen

Improve task lighting in the kitchen by adding inexpensive halogen or incandescent lights underneath cabinets. This focuses the light onto the countertops, which are the main work surfaces in the kitchen.
