Man kills self; injures woman

Published: Tue, July 12, 2005 @ 12:00 a.m.

GIRARD -- Police are investigating an attempted murder/suicide that took place this weekend on Lewis Circle.

Police Chief Frank Bigowsky said officers went to 298 Lewis Circle after receiving calls about a shooting.

Bigowsky said police believe Joseph O'Connell, 26, shot, Michelle Skidmore, 20, before turning the gun on himself.

O'Connell died of a gun shot to the head. His body was taken to the Trumbull County Coroner's Office for an autopsy.

Skidmore is in guarded condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center.

"I think he probably thought she was going to die because he shot her twice," Bigowsky said, noting Skidmore was shot in the neck and chest area.

Skidmore was able leave the home go to a neighbor's home for help. Police were then called, Bigowsky said.

Bigowsky said he is not sure what caused the shooting but said the two had been arguing earlier in the day.
