Ohio State grad receivesosteopathic doctorate
Stephen G. Miller received a doctor of osteopathic medical degree from The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine at Louis J. Tullio Arena in Erie, Pa.
Dr. Miller is the son of Patricia Santucci and Gerald Miller of Youngstown and grandson of Angelo and Delores Sebastiano of Liberty and Merle and Betty Lou Miller of Youngstown.
A Liberty High School and Ohio State University alumnus, Dr. Miller will specialize in emergency medicine.
YSU grad receives dentaldegree and college honors
Brian P. Schmidt has received his doctor of dental medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Dr. Schmidt was honored with receiving the college's Dean's Award for completing dental school first in his class, the annual Dr. Harold Foster Award and NSU's Oral Surgery Award.
He was also selected to join the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society. Dr. Schmidt begins an oral surgery residency this month at Metro Health Hospital in Cleveland.
Dr. Schmidt is a graduate of Youngstown State University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology. His wife, Dr. Rhea Nicklow, also a graduate of NSU College of Dental Medicine, is completing her residency in advanced general dentistry at NSU.
Canfield woman receivespharmaceutical degree
Michele T. Johnson, daughter of Christopher and Mary Kaye Johnson of Canfield, received her doctor of pharmacy degree from Ohio State University.
During the final year of the pharmacy program, Johnson received honors distinction for five of nine advanced pharmacy practice monthly experiences. Some of these honors include recognition for her interaction with patients at OSU Thomas E. Rardin Family Practice Center, a general family medicine clinic affiliated with the OSU Medical Center, and for a research project she completed at a hospital pharmacy consulting and management company.
A 1993 Chaney High School graduate, she earned a dual major bachelor's degree in combined sciences (biology/chemistry) and psychology from Youngstown State University in 1997 and a master's degree in business administration from YSU in 1998. Johnson was an intern at Riverside Methodist Hospital and Kroger Pharmacy. She plans to pursue a career in pharmaceutical industry as a medical science liaison.
Austintown woman earnsYale juris doctorate
Ashlie Case, daughter of Tom and Georgia Case of Austintown, recently earned her juris doctorate degree from Yale Law School in New Haven, Conn.
Case, a 1998 graduate and valedictorian of Austintown Fitch High School, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2002 from the University of Akron. She will begin practice at the law firm of Jones Day, which has offices in Columbus and Cleveland, in September.
Liberty native earns Ph.D. in communication
Juliann Cortese, daughter of Joseph and Claire Cortese of Liberty, has graduated with a doctor of philosophy degree from Ohio State University in communication.
In 2004, she received the Walter B. Emery Memorial Scholarship while completing her dissertation, "A Social Cognitivist View of Hypermedia Learning." The OSU trustee board grants this award to outstanding doctoral students in recognition of their scholarly endeavors, academic excellence, and service to their field.
Cortese, a graduate of Ursuline High School and Youngstown State University, received her master's degree in communication studies from Kent State University.
She will begin work as an assistant professor at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla., in the fall. She and her husband, John Campana, and daughter, Joelie, will live in Tallahassee.
